DATO’ SRI THOMAS HAH TIING SIU’S JOINLAND COMMITTED TO DEVELOP NEW

HANOVER ISLAND, PAPUA NEW GUINEA

Hailing from Malaysia, Dato’ Sri Thomas Hah

Tiing Siu is the founder of Joinland Group
(“Joinland”), an established conglomerate
with diverse business interests globally
including cold storage, property, construction
and logistics, to name a few.

8 years ago, Joinland, through its Papua New

Guinea - based subsidiary, Joinland (PNG)
Ltd (“Joinland PNG”), embarked on a major
undertaking involving an agro-forestry project,
known as the Central New Hanover.

Agro-forestry Project (“New Hanover

Project”). The project aims to develop rubber
plantations on the island of New Hanover with
a vision to transform the island to serve as a
rubber-producing hub of Papua New Guinea
(“PNG”), stimulating economic growth in this
area.

The New Hanover Project is a collaboration between Joinland PNG with a local developer,
Tutuman Development Ltd (“Tutuman”) with the support of PNG’s local government
authorities and provincial administration. In January 2012, Joinland and Tutuman joined
hands to initiate the project to plant rubber trees under the Special Agriculture Business
Leases (“SABL”) arrangement.

Mr. Pedi Anis, the Chairman of Tutuman

commented,
“Being a New Hanover native and an advocate of land
development, I am very pleased to be working with our
Malaysian partner, Joinland, on this endeavour that
can stimulate growth and bring prosperity to the
people of New Hanover.” Anis said that the key issues
and challenges faced by the New Hanover people
were in relation to the big number of school leavers,
no job opportunities, lack of basic services, no major
economic activities, no income-earning opportunities,
lack of government support, and others.
“Without initial and continuing financial support from investors, no real change is ever going
to be realised and achieved on customary land. A private sector initiative is a must to
establish and grow economic holdings on lease and leaseback customary land. There has
been a lack of socio-economic development and this agro-forestry project will help build and
sustain the economy of the area in the long term,” Mr. Pedi Anis added.

The land area that has been designated for the New
Hanover Project covers a total of 56,592 hectares, with
Joinland committed to plant a total of 5 million rubber
trees by 2022. Since the project first started in 2012,
Joinland has planted over 2.5 million rubber trees,
560,000 cocoa trees and 54,000 coconut trees. The New
Hanover Project has generated over K88.3 million in
revenue since the start of the project, with K35.6 million
paid to landowners in royalty and levies and K52.7
million paid in export duties and levies to the PNG
government.
