Proposal

For this unit I have decided to make a short film and music video. This is because I feel that I can
create effective pieces of work in these categories. I also chose these because I want to improve my
filmmaking in these genres, so that I am able to create films in all genres and styles to a higher
quality.

Throughout this qualification I have learnt many techniques to improve my overall filmmaking
abilities. More specifically I have learnt key structuring techniques to allow much short films and
music to flow better. The rule of thirds it one of the most important things that I have learnt, as I use
this technique in all my production to make it easier for the audience to understand positioning of
characters, their emotions and how they interact with other characters.

I have decided on theses formats because I want to use this work for my portfolio, and I think that
creating a short film and music video will be the most effective way to show off my skills to clients,
which is the reason for my portfolio.

For this project I would like to use specific equipment to enhance the production value of my videos.
For example, I will use lights to exaggerate certain themes. The project will force me to do this, as the
short film isn’t allowed dialogue. Therefore, I will need to use the lights to help the audience to
understand the plot of the short more effectively.

Camera angles are also very important to help communicate to the audience further the ideas of the
stories.

For my evaluation, I will be doing weekly blogs along with a few other techniques to ensure that I
have evaluated and improved on my work efficiently. My weekly blog will highlight what I have
achieved that week, what I still need to complete, if I am on track and most importantly what work
needs to be improved.

I will also be using teacher and peer feedback to help evaluate my work. This feedback will give me
an idea of what the audiences opinion may be like, as my teacher are the same age as my target
audience. This will mean that I can use their opinions to help me change and edit small aspects of my
production to ensure that when I have finalized my production, it will be exactly what the target
audience want to see.

Finally, I will evaluate productions made by professional directors. This will give me a goal to aspire
to. Evaluating their work will give me a chance to understand the practicality of their production, so
that I can use similar techniques in my own production. This will continue to help improve my
production because I will then be using the techniques that make their work so effective and this will
create a more professional look my own production.
