1. Calculate the diameter of a polished shaft without any defects, fitted with two belt driven
pulleys at A and D as shown below, using the ASME method. Power transmitted is
100kW and the shaft revolves at 500rpm. The ratio of belt tensions for both pulleys may
be assumed to be 5. Factors for bending moment and torsion are Kb =3 and Kt =1.5
respectively. Ultimate strength and Yield strength of the material are 770 MPa and 580
MPa respectively. Neglect the pulley weight and there are no keyways.

2. A transmission shaft carries a pulley midway between the two bearings. The bending
moment at the pulley varies from 200 Nm to 600 Nm, as the torsional moment in the
shaft varies from 70 Nm to 200 Nm. The frequencies of variation of bending and tor-
sional moments are equal to the shaft speed. (Sut = 540 N/mm2 and Syt = 400 N/mm2 )
and the corrected endurance limit of the shaft is 200 N/mm2 . Determine the diameter of
the shaft using a factor of safety of 2.
