Max. Marks: 30 Time: 2 Hours Date: 29.10.2018 (AN)
PART-A
1. Answer ALL the questions. All Questions carry Equal Marks[ 6x1M=6 Marks]
a) State the applications of gear drives
b) What is Wahl factor? Why is it used?
c) Give the applications of flat belt drive.
d) Write the equation for power transmitted by the belt drive.
e) What is nip of a leaf spring?
f) State the function of the Piston rings for an IC engine piston?
PART-B
( Assume if any data required)
Answer any three questions. All Questions carry Equal Marks
2 Discuss the different types of belts and their material used for power transmission. 8 Marks
A pulley is driven by a flat belt running at a speed of 600 m/min. The coefficient of
friction between the pulley and the belt is 0.3 and the angle of lap is 160°. If the
maximum tension in the belt is 700 N; find the power transmitted by a belt.
3 Derive the expression for the beam strength of gear teeth- Lewis equation. 8 Marks
4 Design a close coiled helical compression spring for a service load ranging from 2250 N 8 Marks
to 2750 N. The axial deflection of the spring for the load range is 6 mm. Assume a
Spring index of 5. The permissible shear stress intensity is 420 MPa and modulus of
rigidity, G = 84 kN/mm2. Neglect the effect of stress concentration. Draw a fully
dimensioned sketch of the spring, showing details of the finish of the end coils.
5 Design a connecting rod for an I.C. engine running at 1800 r.p.m. and developing a 8 Marks
maximum pressure of 3.15 N/mm2. The diameter of the piston is 100 mm ; mass of the
reciprocating parts per cylinder 2.25 kg; length of connecting rod 380 mm; stroke of piston
190 mm and compression ratio 6 : 1. Take a factor of safety of 6 for the design. Take length
to diameter ratio for big end bearing as 1.3 and small end bearing as 2 and the
corresponding bearing pressures as 10 N/mm2 and 15 N/mm2. The density of material of the
rod may be taken as 8000 kg/m3 and the allowable stress in the bolts as 60 N/mm2 and in
cap as 80 N/mm2. The rod is to be of I-section for which you can choose your own
proportions. Draw a neat dimensioned sketch showing provision for lubrication. Use
Rankine formula for which the numerator constant may be taken as 320 N/mm 2 and the
denominator constant 1 / 7500.
PART-A
1. Answer ALL the questions. All Questions carry Equal Marks 6x1=6Marks
a) Explain in brief active and inactive coils of a spring.
b) Distinguish between open and cross belt drives.
c) Why are connecting rods made of I-Section?

4 Design a cast iron piston for a single acting four stroke engine for the following data: 8 Marks
2
Cylinder bore = 100 mm ; Stroke = 125 mm ; Maximum gas pressure = 5 N/mm ;
Indicated mean effective pressure = 0.75 N/mm2 ; Mechanical efficiency = 80% ; Fuel
consumption = 0.15 kg per brake power per hour ; Higher calorific value of fuel = 42 ×
103 kJ/kg ; Speed = 2000 r.p.m. Any other data required for the design may be
assumed. Taking tensile strength for cast iron = 38 MPa. Taking C = 0.05 (For cast iron,
k = 46.6 W/m/°C, and TC – TE = 220°C) Taking coefficient of friction = 0.1; Take no of
rings=4, σt for piston rings 90MPa.Pw=0.035 N/mm2.
