1 (a)
(b)

What are the different types of lubricants used in practice?

Layout the design procedure for Hydrodynamic journal bearing.

2 (a)
(b)

What are shims and what is their use?

The high speed diesel engine has the following particulars: Bore of the cylinder = 90 mm;
Stroke = 140 mm; Speed = 1500 r.p.m; Compression ratio = 16; Maximum pressure = 4.5 MPa
upto 7% of the stroke; Mass of the reciprocating parts = 3 kg; and the length of the connecting
rod = 350 mm. Design a suitable connecting rod for the given duty.

3 (a)

Why different piston clearances are allowed at the top, in the middle and at the open end of a
piston?
The piston of an automobile engine is held to the connecting rod by a wrist pin having an
external diameter of 20 mm and internal diameter of 11 mm. The length of the bearing in the
rod end is 25 mm and the bearing in each boss of the piston is 15 mm. The maximum load
transmitted is 14.50 KN.
(i) Determine the bearing pressure between the rod end and the wrist pin.
(ii) Compute the maximum bending stress in the pin, assuming that it is a simple beam with a
uniform load. Compute the maximum deflection of the pin.

(b)

A machine member is made from a triangular section rod and is located as shown in figure. If
the maximum stress at any section or point is not to exceed 20 N/mm2, determine the
dimensions of the rod.

A flat belt, 8 mm thick and 100 mm wide transmits power between two pulleys, running at 1600
m/min. The mass of the belt is 0.9 kg/m length. The angle of lap in the smaller pulley is 1650
and the coefficient of friction between the belt and pulleys is 0.3. If the maximum permissible
stress in the belt is 2 MN/m2.Find: (i) maximum power transmitted and (ii) initial tension in the
belt.

A steel pinion with 200 full depth involute teeth is transmitting 7.5 kW power at 1000 r.p.m from
an electric motor. The starting torque of the motor is twice the rated torque. The number of
teeth on the pinion is 25, while the module is 4 mm. The face width is 45 mm. Assuming that
the velocity factor accounts for the dynamic load. Calculate (i) effective load on the gear tooth,
and (ii) bending stress in the gear tooth.

7 (a)
(b)

Differentiate between differential screw and compound screw.

Discuss the effect of efficiency in power screw applications. List some examples where a high
efficiency is desirable. Also list applications where a lower efficiency might be needed.

8 (a)
(b)

Explain the functions and requirements of sprindle unit.

What are the materials used for spridles? Explain.
