VI. STI (Sexually Transmitted Infections) / HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) AND
AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) PREVENTION & CONTROL
PROGRAM
 HIV may live in the human body for years & can be spread to others
 HIV lowers the person’s body defense mechanism rendering the body unable to
fight diseases & infections.
 People infected with HIV usually look and feel healthy & may not know that they
had been infected for many years.
 The person’s HIV status can only be determined through the HIV Antibody
Testing.
 Mode of Transmission:
a. Unprotected sexual intercourse.
b. Receiving infected blood and blood products in a transfusion or organ
transplant.
c.Sharing of needles and other skin piercing instruments
d. From HIV positive mother to her baby during pregnancy and
breastfeeding.
