Aspects of Gender Orientation

Interviewees
' Men (M) [7]
Perspectives

Definition of  Hunger would be the intense desire for something, usually uses to describe
Hunger having a need. Usually this pertains to food but can also pertain to other
concepts (like hungering for achievements?)
 Hunger is when you don't have anything to eat, no work to earn money on
 if I can't find a permanent job I will definitely be hungry because I am short on
budget ebes food to buy other important things I will set aside for rent and so
on
 Hunger during ecq is being unproductive, helpless, bored, unable to do
anything to contribute to society. They say stay at home is already helping but
there is a greater need to help those who help us. Those helping us being the
front line medical workers. The sudden lockdown the the country created a
void in society. There's no planned contingency for transportation and
production to aid the medical sector.
 I define hunger by means of the inability to eat due to the scarcity of food.
 Hunger is the absence of food to eat. It is the state when the stomach is
grumbling longing for food to satisfy its hunger.
 Hunger means you want something to eat that you are in need of food.

Hunger defined by men as the lacking of food and things to do.

Description -  Yes, I have experienced hunger, especially because of the stress I get from
Hunger online classes. This, in turn, results in me stress eating, thus feeling hungry
Experience more often. I also get more hungry at night since I stay up late most days, if
not, everyday. Basically, whenever I exert a lot of effort in work, I get hungrier
because of the loss of energy. The hunger I experience, I would say, is
concerning and hard to manage at times, making me lose focus and self
control.
 No
 even if my father's pension is not delayed, I can eat normally in quaratine but
we delayed eating this quaratine now.
 Yes, I experienced that hunger daily. Seeing our countrymen work tirelessly
while also lacking in logistics. I hated not being able to do anything without
exposing myself to getting infected and further burdening society.
 No, I did not experience hunger during the COVID-19 ECQ-GCQ. It is because
my parents have a monthly budget that can support our family especially for
food for our daily meal.
 No, I did not experience hunger because before the lockdown, I already
purchased supplies to last the COVID-19 period.
 No
Out of 7, 5 had not experience hunger suggesting that they are quite capable of
surviving in this pandemic. The other 2 are not directed much to them but to other
factors.
Effect -  I do not really think much about my perceptions on these topics, but now that
Perception you've mentioned it, I guess it makes me realize more that deep down, we're
as M,W,G,B, all human. We all have the same needs, but only different perceptions. This
or L makes me want to preach more on our equality and rights we desperately are
fighting for. In my opinion, no one should suffer from hunger or from the
scarcity of human needs, regardless of gender, sex, sexual orientation, etc.
 I think it affects my perception on being a man because a man should provide
to the family regardless if you're the son or the father.
 I'm not used to being hungry but for other men I can eat enough if there is
something on our table.
 Nope. No connection.
 My perception of being a boy is not affected whenever I experience hunger.
 It affected my morale and I am disappointed with myself for not doing
anything to keep me out of hunger
 It is not that difficult because I was mostly in charge of getting food from the
store, I as a man am not scared of going to the store and buy food.

Some did not see a connection or has no comment of the matter but for those that
did see a connection says that as a man and the provider of the family it is their
responsibility to get food in the table.
Coping  During the lockdown, I try to ration our food better, making sure to only eat
Mechanism what is needed, and not get tempted to overeat just because all the food is
within reach. I also make it a habit to not eat as much anymore at night,
preferably past 9, as eating too much can disrupt sleep quality as well. We do
look out for ayuda in our barangays as well, taking as much help as we can
get. If there are none, we regularly do grocery shopping once our supplies are
depleted.
 we did not experience hunger during the lockdown since my siblings and
parents could buy food.
 N/A
 I played animal crossing new horizon to keep myself busy. I have resigned
myself to being a potato. Giving up on being productive. Accepted the fact
that not doing anything also helps.
 We managed to plant some vegetables in our backyard like papaya, tomato,
eggplant and talbos ng kamote.
 I manage my resources quite well anticipating that the lockdown will take
longer than expected. I spent only on essential things such as the basic
necessities and cut down expenses that are not immediate and necessary.
 I save money to buy food and stock up as much as I need.

The men does do many ways to keep themselves out of hunger such as farming,
saving money, and/or rationing.

 This epidemic really opened my eyes on how the people reacted on these. As
a woman, my perspective opened like how to budget your money for food
and other necessities, your patience going to the market, finding ways to earn
money like work at home jobs are options that we can consider.
 As a woman, it affected, of course, my daily life. It brought a major
adjustment to my day-to-day works. Moreover, I realize that hunger is
interconnected with demographics. Different individuals have different
perceptions of the concept of hunger. Moreover, hunger is also based on the
needs of the individual and as hunger increases, the price of needs also
increases.
 I cannot answer since I have not experience it.
 It didn't affect anything
 Not really, I just feel hungry. It doesn’t change my perception as I was just
hungry not questioning my gender.

provide for food.
 It didn't affect anything because I have enough food

effect of pandemic in their almost care-free life had change their lifestyle.
Coping  Eat, sleep, read, watch anime, watch movies and series
Mechanism  Did not experience hunger.
 We had to bear with what was available
 As I have mentioned before, it brought a turnabout in my daily life as a
person. What I usually don't do, I am now doing it for the sake of satisfying
my hunger. I try to learn and try new things. I learn how to cook sweet potato
Leche flan etc. (I am now the cook of my family, btw). I explore reading light
novels instead of just reading mangas and watching animes. I am now
exercising to lose some fats. The lockdown made me venture new things in
life.
 I made temporary work in order for me to earn for a days food.
 I did not cope with hunger during the lock down because we had food.
 I relied on the SAP given by the government
 I withdrew money to buy food and stock up as much as I need.
 I did not cope with hunger because I never runout of food

With a mixed result, the underlying coping mechanism is more on their daily routine
at home with some going or relying on external factors to keep themselves out of
hunger ranging from government aid to doing personal business outside.

Perception as my belief because everyone around the world is affected by the pandemic.
M,W,G,B, or  I didn't experience hunger since I know how to cook, it just hit me a

Interviewees
' Boys (B) [3]
Perspectives

Definition of  You feel hunger caused by lack of eating or not taking food for a span of time.
Hunger  Hunger is a state due to food scarcity.
 Talking about the physical aspects, hunger is the feeling or desire of any living
organism to satisfy oneself by eating. Other definitions of hunger may include
the desire for improvements, solutions, or change which can fall under the
psychological aspects.

The boys gave a simple explanation as what hunger is to them being the lack of food.
Description -  Yes. I feel hunger every morning and afternoon. I'm hungry whenever I'm
Hunger tired and I think it's normal.
Experience  We didn't starve during the quarantine period but it is hard to see people
struggling to find a way to feed their families in a sense that their desperate
acts lead them to something uncalled for. This raises awareness to everyone
that we must help each other during these trying times. I am very lucky to
have my parents, if it weren't for them, I may be starving too.
 During the strict community quarantine, of course, I experience hunger.
Coming from an indigent family worsened by the pandemic, the loss of job
opportunities would also mean empty plates every meal. As the quarantine
loosens, we also adjusted when it comes to budgeting and spending. The
feeling is not quite new, but it is still a challenge for us.

1 of the respondent stuck very hard as their entire life is threated by hunger with his
family loss of livelihood and the pandemic era being uncooperative or unforgiving for
him and his family.
Effect -  For me it won't affect my perception of my gender.
Perception  Since we didn’t experience hunger, I might just say my opinion about it.
as M,W,G,B, Hunger sometimes do alter our gender roles. For example, some women are
or L forced to do manly things in desperate of finding a way to survive.
 It does not really impact my perception of gender. It's just we need to
"survive" the day even without or with limited food.

None of the boys saw a connection suggesting that they see this equally in the eyes of
the other gender or neutrally.
Coping  I eat balanced amount of food.
Mechanism  My parents are prepared in situations like this. They are saving money every
now and then. We did struggle a little bit but we are able to make it.
 Thanks to some relief goods from the government, we're able to cope up with
our day-to-day lives. Also as mentioned earlier, the adjustments on budgets
and spending helped us a lot since income is really "nowhere to be found".
2 have families to rely on but 1 has to rely on the government which is not enough for
him and his family.

Hunger reason that you are lacking financially and you don't have enough money to
buy food.
 Unable to get food when you need it due to restrictions in resources

Experience answer is no.
 No
 Nope, I didn't experience hunger.

None experience hunger suggesting they are capable of surviving the pandemic era.
Effect -  As someone who has never experienced hunger, I'm lucky, but on the other
Perception hand, there's a lot of LGBTQ+ members who are experiencing hunger at this
as M,W,G,B, moment. Some, if not all members of the LGBTQ+ are breadwinners of their
or L families, considering the effect of this pandemic where many lost their job,
they are now financially unstable and probably suffering from hunger. It only
shows that, hunger is an issue that concerns everyone, not only to men or
women, but also among LGBTQ+ members, hunger is an issue that concerns
every gender.
 N/A
 As part of the LGBTQ community, it affects my perception that we are blessed
in times of crisis like this. We never get the chance of begging for alms to
government officials. But for those who are in a situation of hunger, I pity
them. It made me realize that some people do desperate things just to satisfy
their needs.

The respondents see this situation of hunger in a more larger scale bring in factors of
government response, job loss, income and finance in the picture one saying they are
lucky to be able to provide food on the table and the other showing pity for others
regardless of gender not being able to do what they can do.
Coping  I try to drink water as much as I can just to fill my empty stomach
Mechanism  N/A
 I am planting vegetables around our house so that we don’t need to buy at
the market. We can save money because of that. The money we are saving
will be used for emergency purposes. I am also helping my family to cope up
in this crisis through online selling. It is one of our primary sources of income,
and with that, we never get to be hunger in this time of crisis.

The respondents does do the simple things to keep themselves out of hunger such as
farming, saving money, and/or rationing.
