Havana International Book Fair 2019 //

Feria Internacional del Libro de la Habana 2019

Jaime Vargas Luna

Synopsis
I have been invited to participate in the 28° edition of the Havana International Book Fair,
the single most important cultural event of Cuba. The invitation is the result of my previous
presence in the country, where I have met important researchers of Latin American
literature, such as Jorge Fornet, Susana Haug, Jesús Curbelo, and others; and because of the
advances of my research on Colonial Peru, some of which I have already presented in Cuba
at a conference in Casa de las Américas. Following that presentation, professor Susana
Haug of the University of Havana invited me to discuss with her and her colleagues about
Colonial Peru, which helped me gain perspective given that their approach was new and
different for me.
As such, with this Research Travel Abroad I will have the opportunity of participating in
various events at the Book Fair, presenting my work and discussing it with scholars,
writers, professors and independent researchers. It will help me develop the last chapter of
my dissertation, in which I offer a panorama that I am still developing and for which,
Cuban scholars and their perspective will be highly ionstrumental. Also, it will help me
advance professionally because of the intelectual social netwroking involved in an event of
these characteristics, where few academics have the opportunity of interacting with actors
of the public humanities field.

Travel plans
February 6 I will travel from Lima, Peru, where I am currently based, to Havana
to atend the Book Fair opening.

February 11 I will travel back to Lima, Peru.

In Havana, I will stay at an authorized Casa (which are cheaper tan hotels).
