AMAZING NUMBER RELATIONSHIPS – 1

Blaise Pascal 1623 – 1662 a French Mathematician famous for his

discovery of numbers that fall into a pattern in the shape of a
triangle known as the Pascal’s Triangle.

TASK 1:

ia
If you look at the numbers in the triangle you will notice several patterns
.emerging.

nd
1. Each row starts and ends with……
2. Each number in a row is obtained
by adding the two numbers in the
upper row. Give an example here.

3. The blue circled numbers are ………………………………………………………………………………….

4. The green circled numbers are ……………………………

5. The brown circled numbers are……………………………………………..

Each arrow on the right corresponds to one row in the table.

In the box on the right, the numbers in the row are added and expressed as a
power of 2. You may copy these in your note book and work on them.

Complete the others in the boxes. Looking for patterns in numbers is

also an art. Learn to look for such

patterns here. Any more
patterns? Circle them.
SOLUTION:

TASK 1:

3. Each row starts and ends with 1.

4. Each number in a row is obtained by adding the two numbers in the upper row.
Give an example here.
5. 1+2 = 3; 1+3 = 4 ; 4 + 6 = 10 and so on.

ia
3. The blue circled numbers are Natural Numbers.

4. The green circled numbers are Triangular Numbers.

nd
5. The brown circled numbers are Tetrahedral Numbers. (Look up the internet
for this)

TASK 2:

Sum of numbers in each row.

sI
1 = 1 = 20 (Any number to the power of zero = 1)
nd
1 + 1 = 2 = 21 When a number is multiplied by itself more than
once, we use a short form called the
1 + 2 + 1 = 4 = 22 EXPONENTIAL form. For example 2 x 2 x 2 =
23
3
1+3+3+1=8=2

Here, ‘2’ is called the BASE and the number 3

4
1 + 4 + 6 + 4 + 1 = 16 = 2 is called the POWER, INDEX or EXPONENT.

1 + 5 + 10 + 10 + 5 + 1 = 32 = 25 We read the number as 2 to the power of 3.

Or to 2 raised to the power of 3.

1 + 6 + 15 + 20 + 15 + 6 + 1 = 64 = 26
th

1 +7 + 21 + 35 + 35 + 21 + 7 + 1 = 128 = 27 (This is also 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 2)

In TASK 1, please notice that you have the same numbers on the other

diagonally placed numbers too – in a symmetrical manner.
