TITLE : SI TANGGANG

Assalamualaikum and a very good day to the honourable judges, teachers and all my friends. Today , I
would like to tell you a very sad story entitle Si Tanggang.

Once , there lived an old lady on the shores of Terengganu. She had a son name Tanggang. They were so
poor that sometimes they had nothing to eat. One day, Tanggang saw a big ship anchored of the shores.
“Oh boy! What a big ship!” he said. He befriended the captain on the ship who was a merchant. The
merchant offered Tanggang a job. “ Would you like to work with me, young man?” he asked.

Tanggang gladly agreed. He went home to ask for his mothers blessings. “Mother!Mother! Where are
you? The mechant offered me a job mother. He will pay me. Let me go! Let me go , please… Tanggang’s
mother could not bear the thought of letting him go. She pleaded with him to stay with her. “My son, you
need not go . Although we are poor, we are always happy. Wealth cannot promise us a happy life son”.
She said . But Tanggang could not listen to her. He went to find the merchant and sail off with him
leaving behind his wailing mother. “tanggang, don”t leave me. I’m old. I don’t have anyone to take care
of me. Please Tanggang, please don’t leave me alone.

All her please just fell on deaf ears . Tanggang sail away with the merchant to a far away land. Never to
be seen or heard of his name in the village again. Five years past by, now Tanggang had become a
wealthy man. He had a ship by his own . he married a merchant’s daughter and became even richer.

One day, Tanggang and his beautiful wife set sail on a business trip. They had come to the same village.
The villagers were very happy. Soon, the news of Tanggang’s arrival reached his mother’s ears. She was
very happy and came looking for her beloved son. When she saw him, she ran towards him crying “
Tanggang…my son..Tanggang…my son, at last you have come back to see this old woman. How I
missed you so much. Come..come and give me a hug my son”.

When Tanggang’s wife saw this old woman in rag and dirty clothes, she asked Tanggang, “My dear, is
this ugly old woman your mother? You said your mother had died many years ago. This ugly and smelly
old woman can’t be your mother. Say it’s not true.”
Tanggang was ashamed to see his mother. He didn’t want to embarrass his wife, so he disowned his
mother saying, “ This old woman is not my mother. I don’t know who she is. I have never met or seen
her in my life.”

“Guards! Seize this old woman and throw her out!” he ordered. Poor old woman. She was dragged to the
streets by Tanggang guards. She could not believe her son had turned into such a wicked and selfish
man.

She was so sad and furious that she called out to Tanggang. “Tanggang! You ungrateful son. I showered
you with so much love and care when you were a child. Now you are rich, you pretended not to recognise
me. How cruel you are Tanggang! The great God will punish you. I curse you and the others to turn into
rocks!”

And true enough as she casted the spell on her son. Tanggang, his wife, his guards and ship turned into
cold rocks.

Well friends….Remember! A mother will walk extra miles just to see her children smile because a
mother’s love is the greatest gift in the world.

So my friends please don’t bite the fingers that feed you. Be sure to thenk your parents for the little things
and the big things they do for you.

That’s all and thank you…
