Introduction
Educational institutions around the world are now integrating ICT with the teaching-learning
process to provide students with knowledge and skills to meet the challenges of the learning
environment. Education plays an important role in shaping society. Education determines the
value of society. Quality education helps in empowering the nation in all fields by imparting new
ideas. ICT plays an important role in supporting strong, efficient management and administration
in educational institutions. ICT has a great impact on teaching, learning, research and
management in the context of educational institutions. Over the last twenty years, many
educational institutions around the world have invested heavily in developing ICT applications
and their infrastructure. The education system in our country is no exception and it is the witness
of many education systems that have increased the market size of the education industry in India.
The government has taken many initiatives for the infrastructural development of education
including the development and implementation of ICT applications and it has been identified as a
catalyst for the transition of the country from a manufacturing-based economy to a knowledge-
based economy.

Meaning and Definition of ICT

ICT means Information and Communication Technology has three parts Information,
Communication and Technology. Data is the summation of data. Technically information is raw
information and statistics that are processed into information Communication is a process that
spreads information and knowledge. Technology is a mode or medium through which
information can be disseminated. Thus, ICT is the technology needed to process and disseminate
information. ICT is technology like new digital technologies like computers, satellites, mobile
phones and internet. ICT is the electronic collection, editing, storage, distribution and
presentation of information. ICT is a medium through which people communicate with their
colleagues around the world, exchange ideas, information, messages and interact with each other
in various technological ways.

Need of ICT
 Education as a lifelong process therefore requires access to ICT anytime and anywhere.
 Explosion Data explosion is a growing trend so there is a need to gain access to information.
 Education should meet the needs of different instructors and teachers; Therefore, ICT is
important in meeting these requirements.
 ICT is a necessity of the society that people are entitled to technical literacy.

ICT in Education in India

In India, application of ICT in Education was started few years back and it has touched every
aspect of human life and it has become a vital part of our daily life. Presently ICT in India has
greater potentialities and a promising future because our country possesses one of the largest ICT
workforces in the world and there is a growing awareness building among the educationists,
stakeholders on the emerging role of ICT in enhancing the process and out-come of education In
1975-76, Satellite Instructional, Television Experiment, a Satellite based educational programme
was introduced in India and the programme related to health and hygiene were telecast to more
than 2000 villages covering six states of India. The INSAT satellites were land mark in the
history of Indian educational Technology. The Educational television broadcasts started through
INSAT satellite in 1982 in Orissa and Andra Pradesh and after that they were extended to some
other states like, Bihar, Maharastra and Uttar Pradesh. Now INSAT cover whole country and a
Variety of educational programmes are being telecast by it, as the vital aim of the IINSAT is to
bring the rural people into national mainstream. Another Satellite, EDUSAT, a satellite for
Education purpose was launched in 2004. Although computers have been introduced in schools
in India, the education system has not been affected by the possibility of conventional changes in
ICTs. The 12th Five Year Plan places special emphasis on enhancing ICT facilities in schools.
Emphasis has been placed on the implementation of ICT at the primary level through the
replacement of previous Computer Aided Learning (CAL) under SSA which will include the
provision of phased network computers, accessories and an Internet connection. Special
emphasis has also been placed on the development of educationally appropriate e-content in the
local language and various software tools to serve the school curriculum. It will focus on
enabling students and teachers to integrate a variety of resources essentially into the classroom
available in digital format, with special emphasis on store-over, cost-effective and efficient ICT
solutions. 2.0 Ning is commercial web sites that offer user- generated social Networks. Students
spend countless hours in social Networks connecting to friends, creating original work, chatting,
sharing photos and so on. (Thiyagu, 2013). Teachers and Students can create their own tutorials,
demonstrations, diagrams, animation on class tools (Thiyagu, 2013). Madhu R. Sekhar, writing
‘India on the Launching Pad’ in Yojana, October 2005, speaks about how India is the favourite
destination for most IT companies due to the availability of skilled manpower.

Role and Benefits of ICT

ICT is a potentially powerful tool to increase educational opportunities. The use of ICT is
making a big difference in the way students learn and learn. Several studies have shown that
students who use ICT facilities show higher learning benefits than those who do not, in fact it
acts as a helpful tool. It provides more comprehensive and quicker and easy access to current
information. Information and communication technology in education has improved three major
factors. It is a tool for addressing challenges in teaching and learning situations; As a
transformation agent and a central power transformation agent in economic competition, it is
able to change content, methods and overall quality and amount of teaching and learning, thereby
reducing teacher workload and ensuring investigation-based classrooms. Moreover, ICT is a
central force in economic and social change, including technology skills for the future
employment of today's students. The Government of India has recognized the use of ICT for
teacher training. A number of initiatives are underway to create digital archives and learning
objects by expanding the availability of quality teaching materials in India; Government of India
Meeting Sakshat Portal, National Program of Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL),
Multimedia Education Resource for Learning and Online Teaching (MERLOT) seeks to create
quality digital content for various levels of education.

 Development of various educational services and mediums.

 Promoting equal opportunities for education and access to information.
 To support technology literacy and distance learning.
 Support sharing experiences and information with others.
 Innovative teaching helps to increase efficiency and makes classroom teaching more
effective.
 Acts as a helpful tool for self-teaching and learning.
 ICT is the store house of the educational institution because all the educational information
can be stored safely through ICT.
 ICT bridges the gap between teachers and students and plays an important role in assessing
students.

The Importance of ICT

Content in conventional teaching has been emphasized and contemporary settings are now in
favor of curriculum that promote efficiency and better performance, which are well supported
and encouraged by emerging teaching technologies. The increasing use of ICTs as tools of daily
life is increasing the quality of education of students. ICT supports changes in the way students
are learning as they move from content-centric curricula to skills-based curricula; Associated
with moving from teacher-centric forms to student-centric forms. It improves the quality of
education and encourages collaborative learning. ICT provides fast and accurate feedback at the
peak. It encourages deep learning and allows educational instructors to respond better to different
learning needs. It enables dynamic learning and allows effective mapping of learning paths. An
ICT-enabled learning environment can be beneficial for constructive learning approaches. One of
the major benefits of using ICT in education is to prepare current and next generation students
for a workplace where ICT, especially computer internet and other related technologies are
becoming more ubiquitous. This computer intelligent and technically educated students acquire
the desired skills to use ICT effectively. Devi S, Rizwaan M & Subhash C (2012) share the
importance of ICT in educational institutions. They discuss how there is a growing need to
provide quality education. Roy Neeti and Jain Yogendra also has mentioned the importance of
ICT in the field of education. In the article the authors have mentioned that in the changing times
the need to be update with the technology.

 Access to many types of learning resources,

 Access to the source of information,
 Learning – anywhere, anytime and collaborative learning,
 Multimedia approach to education, authentic and up to date information,
 Access to online libraries, repositories, access to open educational resources,
 Teaching of different subjects made interesting, and educational data storage,
 Distance education and online education,
 Multiple communication channels, e-mail, chat, blogs etc.,
 Reduce time on many routine tasks.

It can be used extensively for educational administration and management. These are some areas
where ICT can be used for effective management of Educational Institution;

 General Administration
 Admission & Registration Section
 Examination System
 Personnel Management
 Financial Management
 Library and Information Centre

Planners of ICT issues must consider: Considering the total cost-benefit equation, ensuring
investments with teacher support and other policies aimed at providing and maintaining the
necessary infrastructure and using effective ICT.

Advantages of ICT Tools for Educational Institutions

 Creation of Independent Learning environment,
 Cost Effective
 Unaffected by Distance and Climate
 Versatility
 Speedy and Instant availability of information
 Remove social and economic barriers

Dis-Advantages of ICT Tools for Educational Institutions

 Requires high investment
 Ignores individual differences
 Fails to solve culturally and social sensitive problems
 Problem of accessibility
 Widening the knowledge gap
 Do not bring behavioral change
 Difficult evaluation
 Regular orientation required
 Requires attitudinal change

Conclusion
To handle the digital culture, educational institutions are adopting modern ICT technology to
create a teaching and learning environment. In order to manage the data of the organization,
access the information, maintain their financial transactions, provide the best services for library
services, etc., the latest ICT equipment and strategies need to be adopted on the premises.
Recently, the government has launched the SWAYAM Portal in India which provides online
textbooks, videos, various courses and publicity education using ICT tools. The application of
ICT should be encouraged in the management of educational institutions, as trainers should be
used to gain access to educational materials. By teaching young people computer skills they can
also influence internal investment for the society of the future. ICTs are likely to be costly to
reach a very large number of students; When used for research; And when administrators use
regardless of time and place. This study reveals that the use of ICT and the infrastructural level is
not satisfactory in all types of educational institutions to meet the current demand for ICT. But
their efforts in this regard will help build a digital society in India in the near future.
