Short case studies


1. Peter has a fractured his leg in motor cycle accident. The cast immobilization has been
removed. The range of movement in his ankle and knee is limited; there is some wasting of
the thigh and leg musculature. He usually plays soccer in the local league and works as a
builder, but has been unable to do so. Peter’s family have been taking him watch his team and
his employers are looking at ways to employ him on restricted activities.

2. Jana, a mother of two teenagers, has rhemautoid arthritis affecting both shoulders, wrist and
elbows, right more than left. She cannot prepare melas without assistance. She would like to
be more independent.

3. Van is a 7 year old boy who lives with his parents, two older siblings and grandmother. He has
spastic quadriplegia. He can read and write well and enjoys using the computer to write
stories. As he gets older he is spending more time sitting and his posture is deteriorating. His
ability to use a keyboard is affected.

4. Maria is 78 years old. She can manage independently in her small first floor apartment, but is
finding it increasingly difficult to climb the single flight of stairs. Her grand-daughter helps her
by carrying shopping bags. Following statement it is found that she has pain and stiffness in
both knees and there is no hand rail on the stairs case.

5. Oje is a 25 year-old man who lives with his parents and brothers. In early childhood, he suffred
from polio. Oje’s right leg and arm are weak. The right leg is also a little bit shorter than the
left one. He walks slowly with a cane and to get around away from home he has to use a
wheelchair. His family member help whenever he needs.
Oje has studied science in college and is now looking for a job. He has not found one, because
employers are reluctant to employ a man with mobility problems.
Oje likes to watch games but would prefer to participate in them. He has many friends and
they spend much time together. He does not go out on dates and is worried that he will never
meet a woman to marry because of his mobility problems and his appearance.

Case study 2 – Rotator cuff syndrome


A 28 year old woman, a housekeeper in a hotel, experience ‘tight’ shoulder pain
has extreme difficulty carrying things with her right arm __________. She has
extreme difficulty carrying out her work in the hotel __________ and taking care
of her 6-month old child ___________. Without the help of her colleagues , she
would already be on sick leave. She has pain at night if she sleeps on her riht
side. She has got used to sleeping on her left side and sleeps well __________.

On examination she has weakness when rotating her shoulder _____ away from
the body. The diagnosis of rotator cuff syndrome (M75.1) has been made.
Following a physical therapy programme her pain is significantly
better.
