CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

Solid waste comprises all the waste arising from human and animal

activities that are normally solid. Most parents and children are not aware

on how they are going to dispose their waste. And also help them to

capture the knowledge and attitudes on dealing this kind of problem.

Based on our survey in this barangay they have a garbage collector but it

will take long to collect that’s why most people live in this particular place

is that they used the sea like their garbage can. That can affect their

livelihood because most people there are fisherman and most of the

family build big pigpen beside the sea that will make their water unsafe

drinking that’s why most family live in this place are malnourished and

they will also get sick like fever and cough. Irregular and unplanned

dumping of solid wastes, especially at night, which are often in gross

violation of relevant rules and regulations continue to hinder plan

preparations and effective land use delineation which were expected to

usher in a beautiful, clean and orderly environment.

In this study, the community of Raw-an point particularly at Purok 3

will know on how proper waste management disposal can help the

environment making it safer for both human beings and animals as well.

As part of the community they were able to be responsible to their own

cleanliness and health, in order to come to know their own situation better

and be motivated to solve their common problem and most importantly

they will able to become an agent of their own development as a

community.

In technical note, the solid waste is used to include all non-liquid

waste generated by human activity and a range of solid waste material

resulting from the disaster such as general domestic garbage such as

food waste, ash and packaging materials; human feces disposed of in the

garbage; emergency waste such as plastic water bottles and packaging

from other emergency supplies, rubble resulting from the disaster, mud

and slurry deposited by the natural disaster waste, such as medical waste

from hospitals and toxic waste from industry will also need to be deal with
urgently but they are not covered by this technical note (World Health

Organization, 2011).

On the other hand, the Environment Protection Agency was

determined a three tiered approach for managing solid waste. Each of

these should be practiced to reduce the amount material headed for final

disposal. They are in order of importance; REDUCE, the best way to

manage solid waste. Don’t create waste in the products. Avoid disposable

for those items that you use are often. REUSE, the better way to manage

solid waste. Reuse items use them over and over until they are completely

worn out. RECYCLE; the good way to manage solid waste this means

taking something old and making it into something new. That’s it its very

simple and very worthwhile. Not only does it keep items out of the landfill,

recycling conserves natural resources (Seminote County Government,

2012)

In the same way Municipal Council enacted an ordinance

reestablishing Solid Waste management also known as “Perkash Fashura

Ordinance na Isandanga”. The ordinance prohibits dumping of unclean

and unsegregated waste at the redemption center/facility, discharging of

human faces along the creeks and rivers, throwing of waste in creeks,

rivers, public places such as, roads sidewalks and establishments, and
burning of solid waste such as bottles plastics, cellophanes and paper

shall be brought to the barangay material recovery facility ( MRF) duly

segregated or directly to the agent buyers. Non-recyclable materials and

special solid waste will be brought to the material recovery facility, while

concerned government agencies according to prescribed methods. The

local government is responsible for collecting reusable and non-

biodegradable waste materials centers and or to the municipal material

recovery facility. Collection of segregated solid waste is scheduled per

barangay (Saley, 2012).

The main objective of the study is to investigate the solid waste

disposal practices and also the health, implications of the community,

especially in the Barangay of Raw-an point Purok 3. And to explore the

impacts of solid waste management on sustainable development and to

obtain baseline information about waste management practices among

parents and children’s in the Purok 3 Raw-an Point, Baroy Lanao del

Norte. And also it aims to implement integrated solid waste management

in the ways that are protective to human health and the environment.

This study will be conducted this second semester of the year 2017-

2018. Since this study is focusing on the awareness on environmental

issues and to evaluate their knowledge, Attitudes and practices towards

solid waste management. The researchers will develop this study for they

believe that through solid waste management the residence of this

particular place will be more responsible for their own waste. Considering

the big factor of their specialization, making it as a great point for believing

us to possibly productive positive results and outcomes of this study.

Theoretical Framework

In this study the researchers will anchor these theories that will

support the idea of Solid waste management: Knowledge, Attitudes and

Practices. These theories are: Solid Waste Management Theory by

Augustino et al (2015), the theory on Leachate by Biliteuski et.al (1994)

and waste management by Ichobanoglous et al (1993).

The theory on Solid waste management by Augustino et al (2015),

solid waste is made up of organic and inorganic waste materials that

comes about as a result of human and animal’s activities and is no longer

needed which needs to be discarded due to its value loss to the user.

Disposing solid waste improperly causes diseases like cholera, diarrhea

among others. Solid waste can be categorized into sources which are

domestic household waste, industrial waste, commercial waste,

agricultural waste, building and demolishing waste among others.

In one hand, the theory on Leachate, waste can also affect water

and soil through the slow escape of liquid from waste disposal sites,

heaps of garbage and inadequate waste collection systems. Leachate is

known to be contaminated water that percolates through waste Bilitewski

et al. define leachate as all contaminated water that has been in contact

with waste (1994). The authors further note that leachate properties differ

depending on the type of waste, the physical condition where it is

generated, weather conditions and the chemicals process occurring is

disposal sites or landfills. Leachate is characterized by a high

concentration of ammonia and organic nitrogen compared to

uncontaminated water. The Leaching of household waste that is untreated

can produce a substance with a high biochemical oxygen demand BOD

which has negative effect on neighboring water source (Porteous, 2000).

On the other hand, Problems with the disposal of waste have been

put forward throughout the history of human kind. A number of old

documents report the practice of throwing garbage in roadways in former

centuries. The lack of plan for the management of waste in villages and

communities have had serious consequences on human wellbeing. The

plagues occurred at the time were consequences of the lack of plan to

controls rats, flies and other vectors of deseases from improper storage of

waste( Ichobanoglous).

Conceptual Framework

Management of solid waste is one of the greater challenges for

development all over the world. It is not only because solid waste

management impact on the environment or health, but poor

implementation of Solid waste Management hinders the nations progress

towards sustainable development. Accordingly, there is a need for more

comprehensive strategies for Solid Waste Management within

development through environmental conservation. The study focuses on

Solid Waste Management not only as a government responsibility. It

should also be done by every individual, since the waste is produced from

households.

The figure A as the Schematic diagram shows the illustrations of the

interplay of the Independent and dependent variables and the output of

the study. The independent variables show the solid waste Management:

Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices. The dependent and the output of the

study is to promote a program about solid waste management.

Statement of the problem

This study aim to determine the level of knowledge, Attitude and

Practices on Solid Waste Management to the residents of Raw-an

Point,Baroy , Purok 3 Lanao del Norte.

Specifically, this aims to answer the following questions.

1. What are the problems of Solid waste management in the community

of Raw-an Point, Baroy Purok 3.?

2. What are the reasons why solid waste disposal wasn’t applied in

various community particularly in Raw-an Point Baroy Purok 3?

3. Is the knowledge of the residents of Raw-an Point , Baroy about the

importance of proper waste disposal convince and understand the

process and practices.

4. What would be the probability rate awareness of residents of Raw-an

Point Baroy about the proper waste disposal.

5. Are the residents aware of what are the possibilities that they can get

like diseases for not having a proper waste disposal?

Scope and limitations

This study will focus on the knowledge, attitudes and practices towards

solid waste management to the community in Purok 3, Raw-an Point Baroy,

Lanao del Norte.

The study will be conducted in Raw-an point, Baroy Purok 3. The

subjects of the study were only the residents of Purok 3, Raw-an Point which

will be evaluated the level of Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices towards

soild waste management. The time frame of the study will be in the second

semester of the S.Y. 2017-2018.

Significance
Waste management is important because improperly stored refuse can

cause health, safety and economic problems. All living organisms create

waste, but humans create far more waste than other species. To prevent

damaging the earth’s ecosystems and maintain a high quality of life for the

planet inhabitants, humans must manage and store their waste efficiently and

safely.

Human beings have been practicing primitive waste management

techniques for thousands of years. Early humans simply dug a hole and

buried their refuse and trash. This was an effective technique for these early

people. Because their population was relatively small, and they did not

produce as much garbage as modern humans do. Burying the trash helps to

prevent bugs and rodents from becoming a nuisance and spreading

diseases.

In the modern world, humans cannot simply bury their trash. While

primitive humans produced very little waste. And that which was produced

would biodegrade quickly, modern humans produce large amounts of waste,

much of which is not biodegradable. Additional, many types of garbage may

be damaging to the soil, ground water and surrounding habitat. To address

this problem, modern waste management professionals place garbage in

lined holes and use bacteria to help facilitate rapid decomposition of the

garbage.

School and administrator. The result of this study would serve as a basis of

curriculum development and improvement. So that they can realize that they

must have to develop on how to manage solid waste management. And it

must have addressed upon to encourage the development of Knowledge,

Attitudes, and Practices of solid waste management inside and outside

school.

Students. This advocacy lightens them up regarding the improper solid

waste management and they would know the effects of it. They would also

know the ways in throwing their grbage.

Community. Community members can participate in solid waste

management by showing proper sanitation behavior, kind or labour, by

participation in consultation and by participation and management of solid

waste management.

Future Researcher. This study can serve as a guide and reference for the

other researchers who would be interested in studying as base line

information in the conduct of future similar study.
