Describing appearance
You are texting with your new friend about some of your new classmates.
Complete the messages with words about describing appearance.

Jake: Hi, Alison. How are you?

You: Hello? Who is this?
Jake: This is Jake, one of your new classmates. You gave me your number a few
days ago. Do you remember? I sit behind you in Maths class. I have very
(1) straight hair like a ruler. I’m also a bit (2) chubby as my stomach sticks out
a bit. People say that I have a (3) round face like a basketball!
You: Oh, yes, of course I remember you. But don’t be so hard on yourself. You’re
not that (4) overweight. I think you’re in great shape!
Jake: Thanks for saying that. Anyway, the reason I’m texting you is that I was
wondering if you’d like to join our study group after school on Tuesdays and
Thursdays.
You: Oh? Who’s in the study group?
Jake: Well, there’s Marcus …
You: Hmm, is he the (5) tall boy that everyone has to strain their neck to look up
at? He’s also got really (6) tanned skin which makes me think he must go to
the beach every weekend!
Jake: No, you’re thinking of Derrick. Marcus is the complete opposite! He’s rather
(7) short and small. He’s also got (8) pale skin. I’m not sure if he has ever
seen the sun!
You: I see. Who else is in the group then?
Jake: There’s also Evelyn. She’s from the UK. She’s got golden (9) blonde hair
which she usually ties up into a (10) ponytail. She’s got quite a (11) slender
body with a (12) narrow face. There’s no fat on her at all!
You: OK, OK! You’re making me a bit jealous now!
Jake: Sorry. The last member of the group is Todd. He’s got dark hair with a
(13) fringe which covers his eyebrows. He’s neither tall nor short, but
(14) average in height. He likes to lift weights in the gym, so he’s got
(15) broad shoulders and (16) muscular arms.
You: Oh, I remember him. He helped me carry my books to class the other day.
Jake: So, would you like to join our study group?
You: Yes, I’d love to join!

Describing personality and traits

You are writing a playscript about a girl being set up on a blind date by her best
friend. She is asking the friend about the boy. Complete the playscript with
adjectives describing personality and traits.

Haley:I’ve never been on a blind date before, so I’m so nervous! Please tell me
more about this guy you’ve set me up to meet.
Chloe:Well, his name is Zack, like I’ve told you before. He’s a really (1) energetic
person who is full of life and energy. As a result, he loves doing all kind of sport
and is quite fit.
Haley:Would you say he’s (2) adventurous though? Does he like discovering new
places and trying new things? I need to find someone like that as I love travelling
and hiking.
Chloe:Absolutely! He’s travelled to many different parts of the world and he loves
trying new types of cuisine.
Haley:Tell me more about him.
Chloe:He’s quite (3) considerate. He puts the needs of others before himself. He’s
also really (4) generous. He donates a lot of his money to charities like Oxfam and
the Red Cross.
Haley:Does he care about the environment? You know that’s of vital importance to
me.
Chloe:Absolutely! He’s very (5) conscientious about the environment and is always
trying to reduce his carbon footprint! He rides his bike to work rather than use any
polluting form of transport. He also composts his food waste to use as fertilizer.
Haley:Wow! This guy sounds amazing! So what’s wrong with him? Why don’t you
go out with him yourself?
Chloe:Well, you know I’m a really (6) outgoing person. I love meeting new people.
But Zack is the opposite. He’s quite (7) introverted and prefers spending time
alone.
Haley:I guess there’s nothing wrong with being a bit shy. What else?
Chloe:He’s rather (8) competitive. He always wants to win at anything he does.
He’s rather (9) confident in his ability to do so as well. He’s not exactly humble, let’s
put it that way. He’s a bit (10) clumsy too. I think he’s dropped and broken about
three smartphones in the past year.
Haley:(laughs) Is that why you think we’re a good match? Because I’m such a
butter fingers too?
Chloe:(laughs as well) Maybe? So, what do you think? Still willing to meet him?
Haley:Sure. Why not? What have I got to lose?
