Documenting Best Practices

Name of Best Practice: School-Based Numeracy Program

Target Potential Users: Students, Teachers and Parents

Keywords: School-Based, Numeracy Program, Numeracy

Describe the process for identifying: The School-Based Numeracy program was developed and
implemented because it has been a long problem of not just the mathematics teachers, but mostly
all that many of the junior high school students (Grades 7-10) have difficulties in doing manual
calculations involving the four fundamental operations.

Define the best practice: The School-Based Numeracy Program is an intervention program
developed by the school headed by the Mathematics department coordinator and the mathematics
teachers that aims to enhance the basic numeracy skills of the students from Grade 7 to Grad 10.

Specify the results: Weekly and Monthly assessment tests were conducted to monitor
improvements of the students’ numeracy skills. Daily, before the math teachers start their lesson,
a simple activity like drills is done to practice students’ numeracy skills. Students were also sent
with numeracy window cards at home and their parents were requested to assist them in
answering the activity. Results revealed that the numeracy skills of the students before the start
of the intervention program was very low in multiplication and division while average in
addition and low in subtraction. However, weekly assessment test results show that there is a
significant improvement in the numeracy skills of the students. The program continues until the
end of the school year and it is done every year. At the end of the school year, a post-test was
conducted, and results show that the numeracy skills of the students improved significantly.

Identify lessons learned and recommended improvements: In the Program, I have learned
that the numeracy skills of the students significantly improved after a series of drills in their
mathematics classes. However, strict implementation of the program should be monitored by the
coordinator. In addition, a systematic communication must be done with the parents they should
be instructed clearly on what to do as a facilitator at home for the window card activity.
Define the critical success factors: Students’ basic numeracy skills improved. They now can
now do activities faster than before. Because most of the activities involved applying their
numeracy skills before they can finish the task in a longer period of time. Students also increased
class participation maybe because they now have confidence in doing calculations on the board
in front of their classmates. They got higher scores in tests that required them to use numeracy
skills.

Identify recommended vehicles for effective transfer: Strict implementation of the program,
effective activities such as game-based and use of technology or multimedia, clearer and good
communication with the parents and other teachers
