Degrees of comparison

REGULAR FORMS OF COMPARISON


One- and two- syllable adjectives : large-larger-the largest
Pretty-prettier-the prettiest
Three or more syllables: beautiful-more beautiful-the most beautiful
Comfortable- more comfortable- the most comfortable

We use -er and -est to form the comparative and superlative for short adjectives and more
and the most for longer adjectives.

Comparatives: superiority, equality, inferiority

Superiority
Short adjectives: adjective- er + than – This pine tree is taller than (mai înalt
decât) this apple tree.
Long adjectives: more+ adjective + than – Food is more expensive (mai scumpă)
here than in the shop near our house.
Equality
As+ adjective + as—Your house is as big as ours. (Casa ta este la fel de mare ca a
noastră)
Inferiority
Less+ adjective+ than—English is less difficult than (mai puțin grea decât) Russian.
The least+ adjective—The second point is the least important. (cel mai puțin
important)
