LAKE TOBA

Long ago , in a village in the northern part of Sumatra island there lived a
young orphan farmer. He lived from farming and fishing . One day he was
fishing a very beautiful fish . The color is golden yellow. When he holds,
the fish turned into a beautiful princess. He doomed to be a fish for
violating a ban. He will turn into a kind of creature who first touched it .
Because the human touched, then she turns into a princess.

The young man fascinated by the beauty of the princess and ask her to
marry. The application is accepted on condition that the young man would
not tell the origin of the princess who comes from fish.He agreed the
terms. After a year, the couple blessed with a boy. He has a bad habit
that is never satiated . He ate all the food .

One day the child was eating all the food from their parents. The young
man was very annoyed said: "The basis, this child, breeds fish ! " That
statement by it self had unlocked the secrets of their promise has been
violated. Hearing the words of the father, the child complained to her
mother, asking what the meaning of his father's words. Knowing the
husband had broken a promise.The princess and son disappeared
mysteriously . The land of their former footing bursts a springs. Then the
water that flows from the spring growing bigger and bigger. And become
a vast lake.Now, The lake is called Lake Toba

BANYUWANGI
Once upon a time in the edge of east Java Island, there was a kingdom named
Blambangan. The kingdom was led by a king named King Sulahkromo. He was
assisted by a brave Patih named Patih Sidopekso in ruling his kingdom. Patih
Sidopekso had a very beautiful wife named Sri Tanjung. Because of her beauty,
the king was crazy about her. Even, the king had made a plan to take away Sri
Tanjung from Patih Sidopekso. He ordered Patih Sidopekso to do a mission that
was very hard and dangerous so that Patih Sidopekso would die there. Without
suspicion, Patih Sidopekso went to do The King’s command. When Patih
Sidopekso was going on his duty, King Sulahkromo seduced Sri Tanjung in order
to be his wife. However Sri Tanjung stayed faithful to Patih Sidopekso. The
king was angry because he was rejected by Sri Tanjung.

After getting back from his duty, Patih Sidopekso went to see the King in the
hall. The king who was hurt because his love was rejected then accused Sri
Tanjung that she had seduced him. Patih Sidopekso was upset to hear what was
told by the king. He felt he had been betrayed by his wife. Then he went to see
his wife and asked for the truth immediately. Sri Tanjung refuted and denied
what was said by the king. Nevertheless, Patih Sidopkeso more believed to the
king than her wife. And then he got mad and dragged her to the edge of a
muddy river. He was so angry there and wanted to kill his wife. Because her
husband did not trust her anymore, Sri Tanjung asked for a last request to him.
She said that if he did not trust her any more, he may kill her and threw her
body into the river. Sri Tanjung also said that when the water turned to be
clean it meant she was right. Nevertheless, if it did not change, the king was
right.

Patih Sidopekso couldn’t stand his anger any longer and then he stabbed his wife
with a knife. Then he threw his wife’s body into the river. Immediately the
turbid river turned into clean and diffused the fragrance. Seeing the incident,
Patih Sidopekso regretted what he had done. He realized that his wife was
innocent. Then he screamed loudly “Banyu …………… ….. …Wangi. Banyu Wangi …..
“Since the incident happened the river was called Banyuwangi.

TANGKUBAN PERAHU
In ancient times, there is a princess in West Java named Dayang Sumbi. She had a son
named Sangkuriang.Sangkuriang was a boy who liked to hunt and when hunting, he was
always accompanied by his dog named Tumang. Despite a Dog, Tumang actually an
incarnation of the god and the father of Sangkuriang.
One day, he got mad at Tumang for not pursuing the animals. Because of so angry, he then
expelled Tumang so the dog went into the woods.

He then returned to the palace and told the incident to her mother. Dayang Sumbi was so
angry and hit his head. Sangkuriang then disappointed and he decided to wander.

After hitting Sangkuriang, Dayang Sumbi felt so sorry and she always prayed and
meditated to get forgiveness from God. One day, God gave a gift because she was so
diligent in praying. The prize is a timeless beauty that would make Sumbi Dayang becoming
young forever.

After wandering for a dozen years, Sangkuriang returned home. When he reached the
kingdom, all had changed. He did not know what was happening. One day, he met a girl who
was so beautiful. The girl was actually a Sumbi Dayang, his own mother.

Sangkurian fell in love with the girl and then proposed her. Because of the handsomeness
that was owned by Sangkuriang, then Dayang Sumbi also fell in love. One day, Sangkuriang
want to hunt and he asked Dayang Sumbi to fix the headband. However, Dayang Sumbi
surprised that her future husband had a head injury. Dayang Sumbi then realized that was
the same injury as her son who wandered away. She then noticed Sangkuriang face, and she
was more surprised to realize that her husband was Sangkuriang, her own son.

After those happenings, she immediately looked for ways to thwart the plan of making a
proposal. She then proposed two requirements to Sangkuriang. First, Sangkuriang should
stem the Citarum River. Secondly, she asked Sangkuriang to make a big canoe to cross the
river. Both of those conditions should be finished before sunrise.

At night, Sangkuriang asked for help to spirit creatures to complete all the work. Dayang
Sumbi secretly peeked at the job. Once the work was almost complete, Dayang Sumbi
ordered his forces to hold a very long red carpet to the east of the city.

The carpet made the light became red and Sangkuriang thought that the sun had risen. He
stopped his work and was very upset because all could not meet the requirements posed by
Dayang Sumbi. Using his strength, Sangkuriang broke the dam and the city became flooding.
His big canoe then crashed upside down and changed into a mountain named, Tangkuban
Perahu.

PRAMBANAN TAMPLE
In the old days of Java Island, in a region called Prambanan, lies two kingdom. Kingdom of Pengging
and Kraton Boko. Pengging kingdom is gifted with a fertile and get prosperous. The kingdom is lead
by a wise king named Prabu Damar Moyo and has a male son named Raden Bandung Bondowoso
while Kraton Boko is a kingdom that obey under the rules of Pengging. The Boko king is very cruel,
he is strong and tall, like a giant. The people of Boko always afraid of the kings anger. Although the
king were not handsome, he has a very beautiful daughter called Princess Roro Jongrang.
One day, the king of Boko wants to rebels against the Pengging. Lead by the Boko prime minister,
the giant race, Gopolo, the Boko army is prepared to announce the war between Boko and
Pengging. They even raid its own people’s properties to support the campaign

Fierce war happens in the borders of the Pengging teritorial mark. Many victims were falling on
both sides and people Pengging be suffering because of war, many people hunger and poverty.
Knowing his people suffer and have many victims soldiers who died in the borders, then Prabu
Damar Moyo sent his son Raden Bondowoso go to war against King Boko. The young Bondowoso is
able to defeat king Boko. Seeing the king died, then Prime minister Gupolo escape. Raden
Bondowoso pursue Patih Gupolo to Kraton Boko.
After reaching Kraton Boko, Patih Gupolo reported on Princess Roro Jonggrang that his father had
been lost in the battlefield, by a knight named Raden Bandung Pengging Bondowoso. Princess Loro
Jonggrang wept, saddened his heart because his father had been killed on the battlefield. Raden at
Kraton Boko Bondowoso arrived, soom he troubled to see Puteri Raden Bondowoso Loro Jonggrang
beautiful, so he wanted to marry Princess Loro Jonggrang as his wife.
As the Boko kingdom is lost in the rebels, and o save her fathers kingdom, the Loro Puteri Raden
Jonggrang accept the princes, with some request. She did not want to marry Bondowoso because he
had killed his father. To reject the proposal Raden Bondowoso, then Princess Loro Jonggrang have a
strategy. The first request, Princess Loro Jonggrang asked for Jalatunda wells (very deep well)
while the second request, asked for him to make 1000 temples in one night.

Raden Bandung Bondowoso agreed. Raden Bondowoso Immediately make Jalatunda wells and after
so he called Princess Roro Jonggrang to see the well. She trick the prince and send him down. She
ask Boko’s prime minister to close the well with heavy rocks so that the prince could not reach the
top of the well. Raden Bondowoso is a tough man, he is also smart. Its not a longtime before he was
able to come out from the wells. He was very angry to the princess, but soon after meet the
princess, he falls again with the beauty of the princess

She ask Raden Bondowoso the second request, to make 1000 temples in 1 night. Bondowoso then
command his workers from genie tribe to help him build the 1000 temple. The 1000 temples are
building up, one by one with the help of the genie tribes. The princess wants to sabotage the
building of the temples. She asks her servants to pound the rice pounding tools and also burns lots
of paddy’s straw .

Because of it, the roosters crowed. The genie take a lookto the sky and its brighter in the east. The
leader of the genie reported to Bondowoso that they have stopped to make the temple because the
morning has arrived. Princess Roro Jonggrang told to count the temples and its only 999 temples,
not 1000.

So, Bondowoso won’t be able to marry the princess because he failed to complete the request.
Being deceived and tricked, Raden Bondowoso angry and curse Princess Roro Jonggrang. “It’s
missing one, and you that should fit the numbers”. The princess is soon turned into a stone statue;
it is exist in the heart of the Prambanan temples until now.

CIUNG WANARA
Long time ago in west Java there was a kingdom called Galuh.  The ruler was King Barma Wijaya
Kusuma.  He had two wives – Pohaci Naganingrum and Dewi Pangreyep.  At that time both of them
 were pregnant.  The king was very happy when Dewi Pangreyep gave birth to a baby boy.  The king
named him Hariang Banga.  He was a handsome boy.

Several months later Pohaci Naganingrum also gave birth.  Dewi Pangreyep helped her during the
birth process but she had an evil plan.  She had prepared a baby dog and gave it to Pohaci.  Then she
put the baby in a box and had it thrown to a river.  Lengser, the man who received the order to throw
the baby in a river, put him in a safe box and gave an egg.  Meanwhile Dewi Pangreyep reported to
the king that Pohaci had given birth to a baby dog.

‘Oh, Your Majesty,  Pohaci is an evil woman.  Last night he gave birth but her baby is a dog!  They
are sinners.  God had punished them.  This a shame for Your majesty the King and the whole
kingdom”

The king was shocked and very angry to hear that.  He thought it was a shame for the royal family. 
So he ordered his soldier to kill Pohaci and the baby.

‘There is no place here for sinners.  They must go to hell”

Then the king called his servant , Lengser.

“Lengser ! Bring them to the wood and kill them!”

“Yes, Your Majesty”

Lengser, who had to carry out the order, did not dare to do it.  He saved Pohaci instead.  Then  Pohaci
lived in a remote village.

Meanwhile in a village by the river lived a couple of husband and wife.  Aki Balangantran lived with
his wife Nini Balangantran.  Several years had passed after their marriage but still they had no
children.  Day and night they prayed to god to ask for children.  One night Nini was dreaming that she
saw a full moon.  Aki interpreted the dream that they would receive provision from god.  The next
morning Aki went to a river with his net to fish.  Suddenly something caught his attention.  In the
middle of the river there was a wooden box floating on the water.  Then he grabbed it.  He was
shocked when he saw a baby inside it.  He brought the baby home and gave him a name of Ciung
Wanara.   In Sundanese language Ciung means bird and Wanara means monkey.  They were very
happy since they had no children.

Several years later Ciung Wanara grew up to be a handsome and smart boy.  The egg had become a
cock.  Ciung loved cock fighting.  He went everywhere to play cock fighting game.  His cock was so
quick and strong that it won all of its fights.  Soon he and his cock became famous in Galuh. 
Everybody knew them.

Then the king of Galuh who had many cocks and also loved cock fighting heard the news.  So he
ordered Lengser, his faithful assistant, to find the boy.  As Lengser got to Ciung’s house he was

When he asked Ciung’s father he was sure that Ciung was the king’s son from Pohaci Naganingrum.  
That time he wanted to do a good deed for Ciung.  Then he told Ciung that the king invited him to
palace for a cock fight.  He also told ciung to ask for the kingdom if his cock win the fight.  Ciung
agreed so they went to palace immediately.

Later in the palace of Galuh,  Ciung told the king that he had a condition for the cock fight.  If his
cock wins, he wants the king to give him his kingdom.  If he his cock loose,  then he will give his
head.  The king agreed because he was sure that his cock would win.  Then in a fierce fight Ciung’s
cock won the fight.  Everybody was surprised.  The king had no choice.  He had to keep his words
and give his kingdom to ciung Wanara.  Then Lengser told the king that ciung was actually hing own
son from Pohaci naganingrum.  He revealed Dewi Pangreyep’s evil action.
The king was shocked and very angry.  He ordered his soldiers to arrest and punish Dewi Pangreyep. 
This event made Prince Hariang Banga got very angry.  He quickly attacked Ciung Wanara.  Finally
the king decided to divide his kingdom into two parts.  The border was Cipamali river.  The west of
the river was given to Hariang Banga while Ciung Wanara ruled the eastern part of the kingdom.

CALON ARANG

People began to talk about Ratna Mangali. Calonarang didn't like people
talking about her daughter. She loved Ratna Mangali very much. When she
heard people talked about her daughter, she got angry. She cursed the
village. People got ill and die.

The king sent his best soldier to arrest Calonarang. But, they failed. Then,
the king called Mpu Baradah. The King asked for his help. 

Mpu Baradah sent his student Mpu Bahula to Girah Village. Mpu Baradah told
Mpu Bahula to propose Ratna Mangali. Calonarang was very happy when Mpu
Bahula proposed Ratna Mangali. She knew that people would not talk about
her daughter anymore. She gave her daughter a big wedding party.

One day, Mpu Bahula asked Ratna Mangali to steal her mother's magic book.
When Calonarang was asleep, Ratna Mangali stole her mother's magic book
and gave it to her husband. Then Mpu Bahula gave the book to Mpu Baradah.

After he knew Calonarang's magic secret, Mpu Baradah came to Girah

Village. Calonarang and Mpu Baradah had a fight. Calonarang lost the fight
because she didn't have her magical book anymore.

Long time ago in Girah Village there lived an old woman. Her name was
Calonarang. She had magical power. Calonarang had a daughter. Her name
was Ratna Mangali. She was very beautiful. Yet, nobody wanted to marry her
because they were afraid of her mother.
 PINNOCHIO

Once upon a time, Gepetto, an old woodsman, living in the great Italian pine
forest, was lonely. He always dreamed about having a son.

Each day, he went cutting woods for the town’s people. One day, an idea
illuminated his mind, the idea of crafting a puppet, which he will call it Pinocchio.
He crafted that puppet and during the night, the puppet becomes alive!
One year of happiness and thriller passed, on a Sunday morning, Gepetto told
Pinocchio:
‘’It’s my birthday soon, my little son! I hope you didn’t forget it!’’

‘’Euh, sure, I didn’t!’’

Pinocchio felt awkward. He didn’t thought about that. Gepetto’s birthday was
coming in only three days, and he hadn’t even a present.
After a long night of reflecting, Pinocchio finally decided to offer a homemade
chocolate cake to him as a present.
When the sun rose, Pinocchio was already ready to go outside find the ingredients.
The main problem was he didn’t even known the in and the recipe.
So after school, he decided to go ask someone for the ingredients to bake a cake.
During his walk, Pinocchio, the wooden puppet, met the town’s sorcerer.
‘’Hey, little boy, do you need some help for your chocolate cake?’’

‘’Hum…You can help me?’’, asked Pinocchio.

‘’Sure, I can. Follow me!’’

After walking few minutes so, Pinocchio saw a big, big, big candy house. They
entered together and Pinocchio got caught by a big cage.

‘’Mouahahaha!!! I finally caught you! You’ll be mine, you’re gonna work for me!’’,
said the evil sorcerer.

Pinocchio was so scared. When the guards came and took him out of the cage, he
immediately ran away very fast and he succeeded to escape.

At the same time, the evil sorcerer, calling all his troops with him, ran after him
and he took out his magic wand. The evil devil changed the little wooden puppet
into a chocolate cake!
When he came back home, he told the entire story to his father and they went to
find the god fairy.
After a long trip, they finally find the god fairy and they got the magical potion for
Pinocchio.

CINDERELLA
One day, there was a beautiful girl named Cinderella. She lived with a wicked stepmother
and her two stepsisters. They treated Cinderella very bad and did not appreciate her.
Near from her home, there was a king’s palace which was so beautiful and there would be
held a big party. Her stepmother and her sisters were invited to attend the party.
However, they did not allow her to go to the party. She was ordered to sew the party
dresses that would be worn by her mother and sisters. While, she did not have time to sew
her dress. Her mother and her sisters went to a party and left Cinderella alone at home.

She felt very sad and cried. Between her tears, suddenly a fairy godmother appeared and
said “do not cry, I can send you to the ball now!”, But she kept crying and looked so sad.
She said, “I do not have a dress to wear in the ball”. The fairy godmother of course would
not be worry and waved the wand to transform the Cinderella’s old clothes into the new
dress which was very beautiful. Furthermore, that fairy godmother touched Cinderella’s
foot with the wand and suddenly Cinderella had beautiful glass slippers. Cinderella was
shocked and said, “wow, thank you, but how I could go to the ball?”. Fairy godmother
then went into the kitchen and saw four rats. She turned it into golden four horses and
into a beautiful buggy. Before leaving home, the Fairy Godmother said “Cinderella, you
have to go home at middle of the night, because this magic will works only until
midnight!”

When Cinderella entered the palace, everyone was stunned by her beautiful face. In fact,
no one recognized her because she was so different. Cinderella was so pretty with the
dress and the glass slippers. A handsome prince also saw Cinderella and he fell in love. He
met Cinderella and asked, “Do you want to dance?” And she said, “yes, I want to dance
with you”. Prince and Cinderella danced during the night and she was so happy at that
night. She forgot the fairy godmother warning that she should go home in the middle of
the night. At the last moment, Cinderella remembered her promise to the fairy godmother
and went home. “I must go!”, said her. She ran quickly and one of her glass slippers left
but she did not come back to pick it up.

Cinderella arrived home a few minutes later. When she arrived, the clock struck in twelve.
The horses and the buggy back into the previous shape and she did not wear the glass
slippers and the beautiful dress anymore. After that, her stepmother and sisters came
home and talked about the beautiful women who danced with the prince. They were very
curious about the identity of the woman who suddenly appeared.

In the palace, Prince kept thinking about Cinderella and he fell in love. Prince wanted to
find out the identity of the girl, but he even did not know her name. Prince has only found
the glass slipper, and he said, “I will find her, and I will marry the woman whose foot fits
into this glass slipper!”.

In the next day, the prince and his bodyguards went to all the existing home. They wanted
to find a woman whose foot matched with the size of the shoe. Cinderella stepsisters also
tried the glass slipper but their feet do not match. When Cinderella wanted to try, her
stepmother prevented and forbidden her. However, the prince said, “let her trying!”.
When Cinderella wore a glass slipper, she had a perfect leg for the shoe. The prince then
recognized her and he was convinced that she was a woman who danced with him at the
dance. He married Cinderella and they lived happily.
