The Long Walk

One day as a sophomore in high school, I decided to sign up for a special college visit.
For this particular session, we had to be approved to attend. As a high achiever always
striving for greatness, I became excited to signup for this session with Howard
University that required a 3.0 for entrance. That day as a sophomore changed the
trajectory of my life. From that moment forward, I began to strive for the excellence
exemplified in that one college session. The Howard Atlanta Alumnae Chapter
representative eloquently described the rich history, culture, beauty, and standard of
excellence seen on Howard University's campus. While the majority of my peers were
not taken aback by the presentation, I knew that Howard University was the place for
me. After leaving the session and heading home for the day, I immediately shared my
excitement about Howard University with my family and anyone who would listen.
After my first visit, my best expectations were exceeded. The campus, the culture,
and the community welcomed me on my first day in. Now on my fourth year in my
journey at Howard University, I have been thoroughly immersed in the aspects of
Howard that I admired the most. The first being the rich history and culture. Howard's
history is the most beautiful aspect of the experience. Since its origin, Howard
University has been at the cornerstone of black history and the mecca for black
excellence. After 153 years, the students and culture of Howard University still uphold
the same caliber of greatness. From being the origin of many of the world's most
successful black educators to greek life, the campus of Howard University has been an
incubator of the most beautiful aspects of being black in America.
As a senior at Howard, I've not only been able to learn more about this rich culture
but add to it as well. Through my matriculation at Howard, I have become active on
campus, joined freshman organizations, served on my school's council, been apart of the
honors program, and became a member of Alpha Chapter Delta Sigma Theta Sorority,
Incorporated. Each of these accomplishments is the same ones I admired others for
achieving long before ever stepping foot on campus. During my last year at Howard,
even during COVID-19, I hope to continue to make my impact on the culture and life of
Howard University students so that in years to come I will be mentioned with the name
of the greats who attended this beautiful university.
