A. PROBLEM
A language teacher taught reading to a group of students at the seventh grade in the
Junior High School. She implemented descriptive texts on a person, an animal, and a
procedure though on-line learning using a Jig Saw Reading Technique. After teaching
those three texts, she administered a reading test with 25 multiple choice items. She
wanted to know the students’ reading competency’s descriptive statistics.

D. INTERPRETATION
1. There were ten seventh grade students in the Junior High School who took the
reading test on descriptive texts of a person, an animal, and a procedure. Their
reading competencies were scored 0 to 100. Each item was weighted 4, therefore, the
scores were ranged between 0 to 100.
2. The students’ reading competencies in the descriptive text of a person are as follows.
a. The minimum and maximum raw scores are 10 and 100 respectively;
b. The sum or total score is 550;
c. The range score or distance between the minimum and maximum scores is 100
-10 = 90 or very wide gap between the poorest and best reading competencies;
d. The arithmetic mean or average score is 55;
e. The standard deviation or the average score lied below and above the mean is
30.27650 or rounded up to 30.28;
f. The variance of the students’ reading competencies of descriptive text of a person
is 916.667 or there were ten variations of the students’ raw scores in reading
competencies of a person, namely 10,20,30,40,50,60,70,80,90, and 100.
3. The students’ reading competencies in the descriptive text of an animal are as
follows.
a. The minimum and maximum raw scores are 10 and 80 respectively;
b. The sum or total score is 380;
c. The range score or distance between the minimum and maximum scores is 80-10
= 70 or moderate gap between the poorest and best reading competencies;
d. The arithmetic mean or average score is 38;
e. The mode or the most frequently appearing score is 10;
f. The standard deviation or the average score lied below and above the mean is
8.27312 or rounded up to 8.27;
f. The variance of the students’ reading competencies of descriptive text of an
animal is 684.444 or there were ten variations of the students’ raw scores in
reading competencies of an animal, namely 10,20,30,40,50,60,70,and 80.
2
d. The arithmetic mean or average score is 32;
e. The most frequently appearing score is 20;
f. The standard deviation or the average score lied below and above the mean is
30.27650 or rounded up to 30.28;
g. The variance of the students’ reading competencies of descriptive text of a
procedure is 195.556 or there were ten variations of the students’ raw scores in
reading competencies of a person, namely 20,30,40,50, and 60.
E. CONCLUSION
1. The mean scores are 55,38, and 32. When ranked, the mean score of a person is first,
followed by animal and procedure the last;
2. The raw scores’ variations were the largest in person, followed by animal and
procedure.
