PLT Term 4 Week 2 Tues Oct 22 2019

Grade 3 / 4

We are taking another look at our pre-assessments for persuasive writing.

Kirby: I notice that on the Grade 3 / 4 overall graph there are only two students performing on crt9

Hannah: I notice the majority of the students across the cohort are performing at crt 5.

Leanne: I notice that there are a bulk of students at crt 7.

Hannah: There are 34 students at crt 5.

There are 20 students at crt 6.

Josh: I notice that overall, half our cohort perform below crt 7.

Leanne: That means that half of our cohort is not paragraphing.

So instructions on paragraphing will bump up the writing.

I wonder where in the syllabus paragraphing fits in with the 3 / 4 curriculum.

Josh: I wonder if children perceive differences in paragraphing between text types.

Leanne: I notice that children did not transfer their paragraphing competence from
information texts to persuasive texts.

Hannah: There is no explicit link to paragraphing in the Australian Curriculum.

Leanne: What about “devices”?

I’m wondering if our work samples show whether Kirby’s crt 5 is consistent with
Hannah’s crt 5? Etc.

Hannah: I notice that Christine would classify leaving a gap as “rudimentary paragraphing”.

Leanne: A paragraph needs to start with a topic sentence and other ideas need to relate.

Hannah: There were also issues with detail and elaboration.

Leanne: We are expected to teach both the structure and elaboration within paragraphs.

Josh: So that means that we teach the structure first and the elaboration second?

Leanne: Correct.

Josh: I wonder if the “common facts” that I used for topic sentences in information texts
translate to persuasive texts?

Christine: Well they are still important in establishing the topic even in a persuasive texts.
Leanne explained the marking system for our rubric again, that was slightly different to the NAPLAN
scoring system.

How are we going to assess students and bump them up?

We compared crt 5 samples.

We had a difference in definition regarding “ideas”. Christine: statement + reasoning = 2 ideas.

We also shared crt8 samples.
