CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

The study is recommending the dreams and needs of the pedicab or

“sikad-sikad” (common vernacular term in Naval) drivers in Naval, Biliran,

Philippines. In particular, it is considered waiting to choose the individual

profile of the trisikad/sikad-sikad drivers on Naval Town in view of the parts

that influence their lives, get a handle on the information of long experience

that advances in driving fulfillment and access to asset-related monies.

Pedicab or Sikad-Sikad is a three-wheeled vehicle with a hooded

carriage body balanced on two of the wheels. The body may be placed in

front or in back of the driver, who propels the vehicle by pedaling. For Waray

it is called “Pot-Pot”. It is also a Visayan word means “Kick” in English and

“Sipa” in Tagalog. But is very useful even if we only want to go within the

town it can help our life easier and our burden of conveying our stuffs. It is

used as a public transportation to people to go to their destination.

Based on our research, there are more than 200 sikad-sikad here in

Naval. The population here in Naval is quite huge and we observed big

changes. Not all people can afford Cars and Motorcycles that’s why Sikad-

sikad is one of the transportation here in Naval that can less the expenses.

Pedicab Companies are frequently referred to as “shops”, which is

also a convenient term for their headquarters – typically garages or small

warehouses. Virtually every city in the Philippines that allows pedicabs

1
requires shops to carry a business license and commercial liability

insurance.

Individual pedicab drivers need to be licensed as well. Requirements

vary by jurisdiction, but typically include a minimum age threshold (16 or 18),

valid driver’s license, relatively clean driving record and a clean physical bill

of health, possibly supported by a doctor’s exam.

Any workers who don’t earn a set salary or flat fee for services

rendered, pedicab drivers’ earnings vary considerably. Your earning

potential is largely a function of your shop’s fare schedule, fee arrangement,

and situational factors particular to your shift. As a Driver, various situational

factors influence your earnings on any given shift, including weather, event

schedules, location, day of the week, and competition from other pedicab

operators. In the Philippines, drivers make their own schedule just to make

money. They started at 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM but they do break time. Life of

driving sikad sikad focuses on supporting a family dinner, being a same to

different drivers.

But then again, the sikad-sikad drivers earning is insufficient and not

a permament work. They earn 300 a day but not sustainanble for their daily

life. If it is raining, they cannot find a commuter in a respective area. The

lesser the commuters the lesser they gain.

The purpose why we are going to conduct this kind of research is to

know the experiences of the Sikad Sikad drivers while doing their job, what

their daily expenses, earnings and competitions are in each other while

working.

2
This research aims to understand the true feelings of being a driver

and on how the Drivers sustains his/her family with only earning from being

a sikad driver. The researchers observed that the Drivers faced problems

towards their work.

Objectives of the study

The study aims to find out the Sikad-sikad drivers experiences as a

Driver of the Municipality of Naval;

Specifically, the study sought to achieve the ff. objectives:

1. To understand the ways on how to gain earnings.

2. To understand how they survive in their current situation.

3. To understand on how they sustain in their daily lived experiences.

3
Framework of the study

Theoretical Framework

A brief survey is presented of some of the decision theories that may

be applicable to transportation planning. Four groups of techniques are

discussed: Statistical decision theory, search techniques, and evaluation

procedures.

The simple model of the statistical decision theory approach to

treating uncertainly was extended to that of sequential decision processes.

The relevance was pointed out to the problem of hierarchical structure. A

hypothetical highway route location problem is solved in this manner.

The subtleties of evaluation and choice among alternatives are

discussed. Some of the directions of current work in decision theories are

pointed out that may be useful in transportation. Manheim (1998), a

researcher, points out that sensitivity analysis is an important tool. It

emphasized that a continuous planning process is needed to solve the urban

transportation problem.

4
Conceptual Framework

The concept of our paper is postulated with the following frameworks.

First, to know the experiences of a driver in which the experiences are not

about pedaling but on their hardships in doing their job. To understand the

reasons why mostly of the drivers gain less. Second is to know if the driver’s

average daily earnings could suffice the daily means or needs. Third, to

know the ways on how to survive in the competition against the other

transportation. Fourth, to understand on how the driver sustain their family

with only their daily earnings from being a sikad driver. Lastly, to know what

typical daily expenses in their daily lives on buying food, paying bills, and

others. If it will affect their earnings or not. We would like to understand the

driver’s lived stories through their statement of experiences.

Figure 1. The Conceptual Framework of the study

Importance of the Study

This study has significant value to the following individuals:

Sikad-Sikad drivers. This study will serve as the answers of their

experiences gaining profit.

Commuters. This study will help the commuters to know the driver’s

life.

Future Researchers. This study will help future researchers gain more

information about Sikad-Sikad drivers.

Scope and Limitation of the study

The main focus of this study is to know the Experiences of a Sikad

drivers. This study is limited to the sikad-sikad drivers in the Municipality of

Naval. This study is conducted through interviews and actual observation of

the sikad-sikad drivers.

7
Definitions of Terms

Commuters. They are the type of people that will be transported by the

drivers.

Drivers. They are the type of people who transport citizens to their

destination.

Experience. It is a skill or knowledge that you get by doing something. It can

also help gain knowledge through doing something memorable.

Earnings. The advantage or benefit that is gained from doing something. It is

also gained by doing work.

Sikad-Sikad. This is called as the “Traditional transportation” for commuting

with it instead of cars. It can also help lessen the population of Big Vehicles

in the specific place.

8
Review of Related Literature

According to the Local government of the City of Manila, which they

passed an ordinance declaring the pedicab transport as illegal. But,

presumably, for lack of political will, police authorities have been inconsistent

in enforcing this ordinance. The Pedicab system and its drivers have

persisted and are relatively unmolested by the police; apparently, their

presence is tolerated for as long as they fulfill their “daily bribe” or when the

police team is not pressured by supervisors to control them. Some members

of the policing team wryly comment: “we just cannot totally remove them

from the streets; they have no other source of income; they also have their

families to feed.”

According to the reviews from the different authors, Motivation is the

reason for every driver’s desire to do things, while commitment is the

dedication to continue to pursue a cause or activity. Together these result

into resoluteness, determination, and constancy in one’s endeavor.

Motivation can produce commitment. It is the reason why a person

commits into doing something. However, simply having the desire to

accomplish something is not sufficient. In motivation, achieving one’s goal

requires the ability to persist through obstacles and endurance to continue

despite difficulties. We may agree that “motives related to the need to

9
express one’s agency or competency are typically assumed to be common

to all individuals”. This could also mean that we can express this agency

through what we do for our loved ones, for their own benefit.

According to Heidi Dahles, in entrepreneurship literature, informal

sector ventures are usually described as necessity-driven and survivalist

businesses and denied the qualification of “entrepreneurial”. Recently, an

emerging argument in western and transition economies has been that

informal entrepreneurs are not necessity- driven. The aim of this paper is to

evaluate critically its validity to developing countries. This article analyzes

the case of the pedicab drivers in Yogyakarta, a famous tourist destination in

Java (Indonesia). With tourism developing into a major industry in Indonesia,

pedicab driving came to constitute a sector unregulated by the government

but managed by neighbourhood-based self-organizations for about three

decades. However, a series of disaster led to the demise of the sector.

According to Titi Susilowati Prabawa, Based on anthropological

fieldwork in Yogyakarta, it is demonstrated that the self-employed, low-

skilled pedicab drivers of Yogyakarta first succeeded and then failed to

create and exploit opportunities in the local tourism industry both in times of

economic growth and collapse.

10
CHAPTER II

METHODOLOGY

This chapter contains the documents on the research design,

research respondents, research instruments, and data gathering procedure.

Research Design

This study will use the Colaizzi method doing a face-to-face interview

to provide the information from the respondents. This design is appropriate

since it’s more on the description of the driver’s experiences.

Research Locale

The study is conducted at located at the Municipality of Naval,

Province of Biliran. We chose Naval as our research locale because there

are many sikad drivers in Naval that can tell us their experiences.

11
Research Respondents

All 10 selected respondents were chosen from the Sikad-Sikad

drivers of Naval using personal interviews. We were able to choose the

following respondents randomly as we have our field research in the

different sikad-sikad terminals within the Naval proper area.

Research Instrument

A personal interview on sikad-sikad drivers to their experiences was

used on gathering the needed information the respondents. It has three

parts. Part 1 is the sikad-sikad driver’s way on how to survive, Part 2, the

expenses they need to pay, Part 3, the statements on how to gain their

earnings, Part 4, how they sustain to work hard.

Data Gathering Procedure

Face-to face interviews were conducted using a pre-prepared

interview guide. Participants were encouraged to talk freely and to tell stories

using their own words. Each interview lasted from 45 minutes to one-hour

and all of them were conducted by the main researcher. At the end of each

interview, the researcher reminded the participants to make sure that the

study findings reflect their own experiences.

12
The following steps represent Colaizzi process for phenomenological

data analysis (cited in Sanders, 2003; Speziale & Carpenter, 2007).

1. Each transcript should be read and re-read in order to obtain a

general sense about the whole content.

2. For each transcript, significant statements that pertain to the

phenomenon under study should be extracted. These statements

must be recorded on a separate sheet noting their pages and lines

numbers.

3. Meanings should be formulated from these significant statements.

4. The formulated meanings should be sorted into categories, clusters of

themes, and themes.

5. The findings of the study should be integrated into an exhaustive

description of the phenomenon under study.

6. The fundamental structure of the phenomenon should be described.

7. Finally, validation of the findings should be sought from the research

participants to compare the researcher’s descriptive results with their

experiences.

13
CHAPTER III

PRESENTATION AND ANALYSIS OF DATA

This chapter presents the results and discussion of the study. It includes the

profile of the respondents, and the data analysis.

Profile of the Respondents

Table 1 presents the socio-demographic profile of the respondents in terms

of sex and age.

Table 1

Profile of the Respondents

Variables f(N=10) %

Sex
Female 1 10
Male 9 90
Total 10 100

Age

48-52 4 40
53-65 2 20

14
Sex. As shown in Table 1, out of 10 respondents’ 1 or 10 percent was a

female and 9 or 90 percent were male. This means that majority of the

drivers were male.

Age. In terms of age, 4 or 40 percent of the drivers, belonged to age bracket

25-47 years old, 4 or 40 percent of them belonged to age bracket 48-52 and

2 or 20 percent of them belonged to 53-60 years old. This shows that half of

the population of the respondents belonged to the age brackets 25-47 and

48-52 years old.

Presentation of Data

The gathered data from the informants’ interview was read several

times and thoroughly analyzed in order to obtain descriptive substance of

feelings from their experiences. From the interview transcript, significant

statements. Similar formulated meanings were grouped to form cluster

themes and from these themes, emergent themes were identified. These

emergent themes answer the sub problems of the study namely, the lived

experiences of a sikad driver’s life.

As noted, there were eight (8) cluster themes in which three (3)

emergent themes were determined. Three (3) emergent themes described

the inner desire and drive and two (2) emergent themes for every day hard

work of the informants. The other remaining three (3) emergent themes

would give details on how work ethics happens.

15
The following are the emergent themes, to wit:

Inner desire and drive

The driver finds passenger around the town even if it’s raining. The
driver’s need patience to find a passenger in a designated location. Also
doing his job better to satisfy his passenger and give him a greater amount
of tariff to sustain his needs and wants.

Everyday hard work

Aiming a greater profit and working more than eight (8) hours. They
find more income not just to pay debts but to have an extra money for
emergency.

Work ethics
Keep pace to other drivers not to create a Rivalry from getting
customer.
Earn money as possible as they can. Look for different ways and if
there’s an opportunity of job offers then they will grab it.

Analysis of Data

Colaizzi’s methodological approach to phenomenological inquiry in

making this study. Hence, explaining the lived experiences of a Sikad
Driver’s profit are best presented through the emergent themes.
This study was anchored on the following theories: Statistical decision
theory, search techniques, and evaluation procedures.

Inner desire and drive

This explains that the drivers will find its way to get some
passengers and even if it’s raining they are doing their best to gain
money. Most of the drivers stay patient to find passengers. Also by
doing his best to satisfy their passenger.
1. The driver finds passenger around the town even if it’s
raining. This is one of the driver’s suffering because even if it’s
raining they still find a way to get passengers to their
destination and also it would be hard for them to find
passengers because of the heavy rain.
Moreover, following deeply to the responses, Informant 1
courageously stated that their gain is not the same due to the
changes of the weather and but still they work even if it’s
raining so hard.

Di pareha... Depende tungod sa panahon man gyud og

mouwan og dili. Mga 300 usahay akong madawat. It’s not the

16
same. It depends it’s because of the weather if it’s rainy or not.
I gain 300php sometimes.

After hearing the response from the Informant 1, we

realized that not only the passengers felt hard when
transporting when it’s raining. Also the drivers, because their
gain will decrease and they will get wet when they work.

2. Patience to find a passenger in a designated location. The

drivers need to be patient to get passengers. Also the location
may be hard for them because of the changes but patience
can help them gain more profit.
As what we’ve observed and collected, I was touched by
Informant 8 he stated that

Lisod jud ning among trabaho kay tungod sa pagbago

sa rota unya kailangan lang jud namo mangita or maghuwat og
pasahero para makakugi mi. This job is quite hard because of
the routes that’s been changed so we just need to find or wait
for passengers.

After hearing the response from Informant 8, the routes

may be changed due to the places they were located. It is hard
to find a passenger especially that there are lots of sikad sikad
nowadays.

3. Also doing his job better to satisfy his passenger and give
him a greater amount of tariff to sustain his needs and
wants. The driver gives comfort and care towards the
passenger. And also, the driver gives them satisfaction with
their extra services.
As what we’ve observed and collected, Informant 2 stated that

Manage kong damog bayranan? Depende pud sa

kadako sa kwarta kay og magmanage kala nga… Ang imong
kwarta mosobra ang imong expenses, dili makasya, diba?
Manage if there’s so many expenses? It depends on how big
the money is and if you manage to… If your money is too big,
your expenses won’t fit. Right?

After hearing the response from Informant 2, he manage

the money he gained accordingly to his expenses. If there are
less passenger around the town his profit wouldn’t be enough
to pay his expenses.

Every day hard work

17
This explains that the drivers want to get more money and aim a
greater profit. Even if it is rainy or sunny they work.
1. Aiming a greater profit and working more than eight (8) hours.
The driver works a lot of time to have a greater amount or big
profit that can support his family and his needs.
As what we’ve observed and collected, Informant 5 stated that

Manigurog trabaho para makakita ug dako… (Silence) ug

para mapalit nako ang kinahanglan sa akong pamilya ug
gastohon sa balay. Working hard to gain a big profit… (silence)
and to buy the needs of my family and the expenses in the house.

After hearing the response of Informant 5, the driver needs

to work hard to sustain the needs of his family and the expenses
in their house. Even if working more than the expected normal
hours.

2. They find more income not just to pay debts but to have an
extra money for emergency. The driver works hard not just to
gain a normal profit or paying their debts but to have an extra
money for emergency purposes.
As what we’ve observed and collected, Informant 2 stated that

Aside sa expenses unahon nako pagingon ang bayranan

sakong mga anak sa eskwelahan og syempre ngabayranon sa
balay. Aside from the expenses. I will first say that I am paying my
children’s tuition fees and of course the house payments.

After hearing the respond of the Informant 2, the driver

prioritize his son and daughter pay the school fees and also the
payments in their house. And next their expenses.

Work ethics
This explain that the drivers keep pace to other drivers not to create a
rivalry from getting customer. Earn money as possible as they can. And look
for different ways and if there’s an opportunity of job offers then they will
grab it.
1. Earn money as possible as they can. The drivers find many
ways to acquire additional income at the same time. Like giving
the passenger an additional services.
As what we’ve observed and collected, Informant 7 stated that

Kuan kanang kay wa may lain trabaho sa og sideline sad ni

nakong trabahoa and kung nay okasyon nga makakita og lain nga
trabaho, aw hala kay kuhaon. It’s like. Because there is a lack of

18
job so being a sikad is just a sideline for me and if there’s an
opportunity for me to get a new job, I’ll get one.

After hearing the response of the Informant 7, the job is a

choice but it helped them a lot. Also if there’s a new opportunity for
them to find a new one, they’ll get it.

2. Keep pace to other drivers not to create a Rivalry from getting

customer. Look for passenger or a customer around the town. Do
not stick into one place but look for a location that has many
passenger.
As what we have observed and collected, Informant 9 stated that

Manigurog trabaho…(Silence) kay damo na karon ug sikad sa

Naval dapat dle jud ka mag paulhi sa ilaha di gani mahudtan kag
pasahero. Work hard…(Silence) because theres a lot of sikad
here in Naval you should not be at last to the other drivers or you
will get less of the passenger.

After hearing the response of the informant 9, the job is all about
seeking passengers and not sticking into one place. Find a
customer in a place where the passengers usually goes.

3. Look for different ways and if there’s an opportunity of job

offers then they will grab it. The driver need to find ways for
other job offers that gains more than they earn as a sikad-sikad
driver. A salary that can sustain not just for family needs and
wants but also for other expenses.
As what we have observed and collected, Informant 2
stated that

Kuan kanang kay wa may lain trabaho sa og sideline sad ni

nakong trabahoa and kung nay okasyon nga makakita og lain nga
trabaho, aw hala kay kuhaon. It’s like. Because there is a lack of
job so being a sikad is just a sideline for me and if there’s an
opportunity for me to get a new job, I’ll get one.
After hearing the response of the Informant 7, the job is a
choice but it helped them a lot. Also if there’s a new opportunity for
them to find a new one, they’ll get it.

Chapter IV

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

This chapter presents the summary, conclusion and recommendation

based on the data gathered on the study.

Summary of the Findings

The main objectives of this study is to understand the lived

experiences of a sikad driver.

The study was composed of 10 percent female and 90 percent male

respondents. The majority (80%) of them belonged to age bracket 25-47 and

the other (20%) belonged to 48-52 years old.

Out of 10 respondents, on the question “How much is your earnings

everyday?”, most of them answered confidently and on “How will you survive

the competition between the other types of transportation?” most of them

answered easily but others were not able to answer well and on “What can

you share about your experiences as a sikad driver?” most of them

answered joyfully but down because of hardships and the weather while on

the question “What are the ways on sustaining the ability to work hard?”,

most of them answered the differently..

The respondent’s answer were different. Some of them doesn’t know

how to answer the questions. It may be hard for them to survive between the

20
competition of the other transportations and it may be hard for them to

sustain their work due to the road accidents and money problems.

Conclusion

After a critical analysis of the report based from the findings

gathered from the studies, the researchers conclude that:

The half of the respondents gain more than 250 pesos per day

from working hard.

We conclude that all the driver’s answers were clearly

understood by the researcher. Their answers answered all our

objectives. Therefore, being a sikad driver is not easy. It may be hard

but by thinking about their family’s future and happiness they will do it

all.

Expenses is also one of the driver’s biggest concern so their

earnings will decrease by paying bills. Because they have a living and

by paying this things it can help their living grow.

Working hard is the main goal for a driver to achieve. They

usually work 8 hours a day to gain more profit and also they work

everyday. They cannot take a rest because of working always.

The driver’s answers were different to the question “How will

you survive the competition between other types of transportation?”

because it may be hard for them to answer the question but still they

answered us well.

21
The drivers respond really came from the heart. They

answered emotionally, happily, and joyful. They were inspired by

talking to us.

Recommendation

Based on the findings and the conclusion made, the following

recommendations were drawn:

The concept of the study can be improved if the demographic profiles

of the drivers also include religion. The study focused only on the

experiences of the driver and also can be improved if there are/is another

intervening variable/s.

Lack of RRL cited if it is study again or improved we suggest to have

several supporting details in regards to RRL. Consider the locality of the

respondents of those who live in rural areas.

The family of the drivers must be concern when they are working

because sometimes the weather changes. The sun heats so hot and the rain

pours so hard. It may be hard for the drivers to work. Other drivers work at

night for their profit to increase while the others work even in weekends.

Also the study can be useful for the government to make a better

system or organization for the drivers. We are also willing to share our study

to them so that we can help them answer their problems. We can make a

program or system to help the drivers sustain their job and help them

survive.
