It is important to ensure that water scouring will nt result in flooding of the area, in particular the area during excavation and relocation work. @) Survey and setting out to be carried out for start work. h) Submission shop drawing need to be prepared for confirmation before work can be start. 4.6.2 NEW INSTALLATION OF PIPE 4.6.2.1 Transport/Movement of Pipe at Construction Site a) It is preferable to transfer the whole pallet of pipes to pipe laying area before unpacking pallet. b) The pallet shall be placed on flat solid ground. ©) Ensure the pallets in good condition before cut 4) Placing pallet on uneven ground or surface may cause the pipe to slip or roll off strapping bands. ‘once the strapping bands are cut, ) During transferring of single pipe, the lifting strap should be tightened at the centre of the gravity point to ensure the pipe is hung perpendicular. De watering shall be carried out to ensure excavations and trenches dry for the pipeline installation work to be carried in a safe manner during the execution of the work. h)_ The trench bottom should be true and even to give the barrel of the pipe soil support for its fulllength, 1) Soft subgrade may prove a problem in swampy area or in loose sand. The bottom of the trench can be improve by adding crusher run, lean concrete or other approved method by consultant and authority. J) Holes or pit for pipe bells should be provided at each joint but should be no larger than necessary for joint assembly. k) Public safety must be considered at all times. Excavated material from the trench should be piled on the street side of the main, forming a barrier to keep vehicles out of the trench. Bedding a) Compact the bedding material with mechanical compactor if necessary to ensure the ground is capable and solid enough to support the pipes along their whole barrel length. Cleaning is needed at both ends, socket and spigot, which are needed to be joined together. The pipe shal be free from any damage, chipping and uneven surface. The rubber/PU ring of the pipes shall be inspected for damage during cleaning process before and after laying. «The pip socket marked shall be placed with the marking facing the upper side. «The pipe should be laid with sufficient support on the base for the whole pipe and not to restrict to the socket only. ©) Applying the lubricant ‘+ Apply lubricant supplied by the manufacturer thoroughly at both ends of the pipe. 4) Align the pipe for installation ‘+ Align the pipe to the centre diameter of pipe before pushing the spigot end onto socket ofthe pipe. ‘+ Donot use excavator to push the pipe. ‘©The pipaline should be laid in the centre line of the trench to allow adequate room for pipe installation, inspection work, gradient re~ adjustment. €) Inserting the pipe «Push ard insert the pipe, with aid of crowbar and wooden timber, until ‘you heer knocking sound between the spigot and socket. For pipe size DN300 and above, the pipe may be pushed and inserted by using lifting vehicle such as excavator or chain block. «Once the sound is clearly heard, check the line marked at the spigot ‘end. The line shall no longer be visible once the pipe is fully inserted. Page 90f27 © Always check the bedding after pipe laying to accommodate the gradienis needed. ) Special consideration + In the ereas where significant settlement is expected, such as area around manholes, short length of pipe should be used as the first joint of the last joint. @) Inspection & testing © Pipeline inspection and test should be carried out to locate and remedy any defects in soundness that may exist at the time of construction. Such tests should take place immediately before backfill 80 as to facilitate replacement of any faully pipes or pipe fittings or to rectify any joint defect. Inspection of the pipeline will reveal any defects in the support and bedding. + Awater test is generally preferred since it relates very closely to the conditions found in practice. Test should be carried out with an internal pressure of 1.5m head above the invert of the pipe at the high end of the line and not more than 4m head at the lower end. 1.6.2.6 Pipe Cutting a) Where flexible joints are to be made, the cut ends must be trimmed with a file or grinder to remove the burr formed during cutting and a chamfer must be provided. b) A Power Driven Abrasive Disc can be used and is suitable for al sizes. There is no need for adjustment to suit pipe size or to attach machinery to the pipe. The abrasive discs are fitted to suitable handheld power tools usually driven by compressed air or small internal combustion engines, ©) After cutting the pipe check the cut end and where is found to be oval, locate and mark the major axis. Measure the length of the major axis. Only where ovality correction be this exceed the dimensions specified in the table, required prior to ointing 4) Reciprocating Power Saws also will be used for cutting ductle iron pipe at the workshop where power supply is available. e) The pipe DN<300 the external diameter (measured circumferentially) enable assembly of the joint over a minimum of two thirds of pipe length from the spigot end wher the pipes need to be cut on site. This is to prevent any faulty joint to go unnoticed until itis revealed by a test on the complete length, which will be more costly anc time consuming to rectify the defects. Testing of shorter lengths may also be necessary where it is required to Sewer Testing 9) Sewer Networks and Pump Stations Volume backfil the sewer to surface evel quickly.
