Creating a 12 volt power supply for Dash Cams

The easiest way to do this is to create a spare 12 volt socket which will run off an
ignition live source.

You will need to gain access to the space behind the console and the fuse box for
the 12 volt socket fitting.

Remove both of the side panels (by the clutch pedal and passenger foot-well) by
popping out the circular caps (one on drivers side and two on passengers side)
and undoing the Torx screws underneath, unclip the panel, and remove.

To provide power to the spare 12 volt socket on the Mk2 Focus you will need a
piggyback cable.

This will go between the fuse box and the space under the centre console
providing an additional 12 volt socket.

Piggyback cable-

First you need to access the fuse box in the passenger foot well so you can locate
the correct fuse point to attach into.
Locate the two securing screws at the front of the board, turn counter-clockwise
and the board will hinge down.

Position the board at about the 4 o'clock position and pull towards you to move the
hinge lugs forwards on their mounts then you will be able to fold the board down
flat to the 6 o'clock position and allow clear access to all the fuses.

Locate Fuse 100 which is on the top left of the fusebox and remove-

Push the fusetap into slot 100 ensuring that the side with the cable coming off is
facing to the right.

Slacken one of the bolts that secure the metal bracket supporting the fusebox to
the car, slip the connector on the black wire under it and retighten the bolt (any
body mounted screw or bolt can be used to provide the earth point).

Insert the fuse provided with the patch cable into the top fuse slot.
The circuit should now be powered, to test that the fusetap is placed correctly
into the board plug a charger (or other 12v device) into the socket and turn the
ignition to position II so that all ignition switched modules are energised (do not
start the engine).

The device/charger should power up, if it does not then turn ignition off, reverse
the fusetap and test again.

When you are happy that the fusetap is correctly installed, place the original fuse
from slot 100 into the bottom slot on the fusetap.

Once you are satisfied with the location of the cable you can cable tie it at
strategic locations as you see fitand run the socket to a convenient location
between the air vent pipes behind the centre console where you can plug in the
adaptor attached to the USB kit.

To close the fusebox back up, tilt to the 4 o'clock position again and push up at
the rear of the board then push the whole board back towards the bulkhead so the
lugs move back into the correct location.

The box can be a bit of a swine to line up but patience will win out.

There is no real need to mount the socket to any surface as it is insulated and
fully rubber coated, just tape it back out of the way so it doesn’t rattle around or
interfere with any car functions but if you choose you can use the provided sticky
pads for a temporary positioning or the screws for a more permanent fix.
