Module 3 Assignment Prompt

ENG 1003-008: English for Non-native Speakers

Instructor: Heon Jeon
Assignment Description
In the third module of this course, you are going to read two literary texts from Favorite Folktales
from around the World (1986), namely “The Devil With The Three Golden Hairs” and “The Orphan
Boy And The Elk Dog”. Like the previous two module projects, in your paper, you will focus on one
particular topic, that is either apparent in one or both of the tales. You do not have to write on both
tales, but you can if you wish to. Based on your topic, you will respond to the text(s), which means
that you should develop your own thesis and arguments based on your topic. In this process, your
reading materials will be the evidences for supporting your thesis and arguments. In other words,
this assignment requires you closely to work with the reading articles for your writing. Your main
job is to transfer key pieces of information from the texts to your writing for developing your thesis
and arguments. At the end of this project, you will be more confident on using sources (i.e., quoting,
paraphrasing, and summarizing) effectively in your writing, and hopefully you will also begin
conceptualizing close relationship between reading and writing in academic writing. In this module
project, you are going to follow a series of steps where each step will scaffold your next step.
Eventually the final step in this project is to have your final draft for publication, that is to submit
your paper. You are going to follow the seven steps: Reading---Discussing---Generating---Mapping---
Drafting---Revising---Reflecting. Given the nature of online teaching, during this project, we are
going to engage with active online discussion at Husky CT. In addition, you will join one group, and
this is very important because you will engage with online group activities such as commenting
your topic, thesis, arguments, mind map, and your writing draft. Therefore, you should check Husky
CT regularly, as I will ask you to do something within your group.
