Reflection on Communication

Going into college, I was constantly asked what I was going to major in, to which I

answered Communication.  Once I said that, there was always some confusion surrounding

communication and what it is.  People would say that is a very broad area of study and how

would I get a job in communication.  Now after almost completing my major I have a direct

answer for them.

Yes, communication is a broad discipline which is why there are so many different areas

of expertise.  Such as, health communication, public relations, crisis communication, mass

media, communication research, organizational communication, journalism, social media, and

more.  Communication students are best defined as students that are: seeking a liberal arts

degree, preparing for careers in journalism, business administration, public relations,

broadcasting, human resource, consulting, and politics.  Communication is the backbone to all

those career paths.

Communication is a major that will not only help you develop your professional career,

but will also help you in your personal life as well.  You learn valuable information on how to

effectively communicate that will help you in your career and life.  I have found my

communication skills have helped me immensely in my interviewing process.  It is easy to stick

out when you communicate effectively and show others that you care and are listening with

nonverbal communication as well.  Communication is an important part of life and business.
