FUTURE AND OUTLOOK

People, nature and the whole world need heat and
water to survive. Without them, all life would quickly cease
to exist. The management of pure energy and water is the
key to the future.

The heating and cooling industry is looking towards a bright

future because heating and cooling are key commodities on
a global scale, offering plenty of new opportunities.

Energy is transferred from the sun to various materials, such

as the soil and bedrock. From there, buildings can be heated
using ground source heat pumps. In the future, different ma-
terials and heat sources will be developed at an increasing rate
in order to utilize solar energy. Another option is to utilize
various industrial processes that produce waste energy.

Society and the commodities required by it will become more

intertwined, e.g. real life vs. virtual life, working life vs. leisure
time, industrial buildings vs. residential buildings – and cool-
ing vs. heating.

Modern information technology serves to connect and opti-

mize all energy flows and traffic volumes with regard to the
transportation of both people and goods.

Cooling and heating pump products focus on the develop-

ment of different refrigerants, their impact on the environment
and their suitability under different conditions in terms of their
energy efficiency.

The pressure of sustainable development poses new chal-

lenges to decision-makers, while simultaneously presenting
new opportunities within the business field.

For Aino-Kaisa Saarinen, one of the most

successful female cross-country skiers in Finland, ecolo-
gy and sustainable development have always been impor-
tant. When she was looking for a new house with her
husband Tom Gustafsson, key criteria included energy
efficiency and low heating costs. The 450 m2 floor ar-
ea, the cold Finnish winter and energy savings made the
skiing star select a reliable and cost-efficient water-cir-
culating floor heating solution that was implemented us-
ing ground source heat. Ground source heat comprises re-
newable solar energy bound to the ground. In recent years,
it has become more and more popular in Finland, becom-
ing the most common heating solution in new buildings.
An energy well was drilled into the bedrock to a depth
of 9 meters outside the stone house built in the beautiful
landscape next to the Salpausselkä ridge in Hollola. All in
all, the well is 200 meters deep. The heart of the house’s
heating system is the Oilon ground source heat pump,
which was an easy choice for Aino-Kaisa. The Hollola
heat pump plant located close to her home and Oilon’s
reputation as a high-quality and reliable pump manufac-

sa’s dream home is now heated by a Finnish Oilon GT

Heating Company and Oilon Oy received the Finnish CleanDesign Award.
The power plant utilizes Oilon’s burner technology, and has reduced car-
bon dioxide emissions by a million tons and dust emissions by 10,000
tons a year. The objective of Beijing District Heating Company has been
to reduce the use of coal ever since the city was elected as the host of the
Olympic Games. The company’s 3,000 MW power plant project is based
on the replacement of coal by eco-friendlier natural gas. Thanks to Oilon’s
low-emission fuel technology, the emissions produced fall clearly below
the emission limits of even many European countries. The awards were
handed over by Jyri Häkämies who has emphasized cleantech as one of
major opportunities for Finnish companies in international markets. The
recognition crowned the Finnish–Chinese energy efficiency and CleanDe-
