• Hard Disk Drive

Definition:
❖ A hard disk drive (HDD), hard disk, hard drive, or fixed disk is an
electro-mechanical data storage device that uses magnetic storage to store
and retrieve digital data using one or more rigid rapidly rotating platters
coated with magnetic material.

Capacity:

❖ The highest-capacity desktop HDDs had 16 TB in late 2019.[104]

❖ The capacity of a hard disk drive, as reported by an operating system to the end user.
❖ It is smaller than the amount stated by the manufacturer for several reasons.
❖ The operating system using some space, use of some space for data redundancy, and
space use for file system structures.
❖ Also the difference in capacity reported in SI decimal prefixed units vs.
❖ binary prefixes can lead to a false impression of missing capacity.

Feature:

❖ The hard disk provides a large storage capacity.

❖ The capacity of a personal computer hard disk is from 160 GB to 2TB and more.

❖ It is much faster than the floppy disk.

❖ It is the primary media for storing data and programs.

❖ It is more reliable than a floppy disk.

❖ Data stored on the hard disk is safer than the floppy disk.

Industry Usage:

o Hard disk drive (HDD) storage technology is now largely used in consumer devices
by offering the same advantages .

❖ it has offered computer users, that is the capability of storing economically large amounts
of data, with fast transfer rates, and quick access to any specific piece of data
❖ A hard drive can store any data, including pictures, music, videos, text documents, and any
files created or downloaded.
❖ Also, hard drives store files for the operating system and software programs that run on
the computer.
