The corners of cubical block touch the closed spherical shell that encloses it. The volume of the
box is 2744 cm3. What volume in cm3 inside shell is not occupied by the block?

A. 4 713.56 B. 3 360.12 C. 4 133.25 D. 5 346.42

Given:

Volume of the box = 2744 cm3

Required:

Volume in cm3 that is not occupied by the box

Schematic Diagram:

Solution:

To determine the value of the volume not occupied by the box inside a sphere, the volume is the
difference between the volume of the sphere and the volume of the box (cube).

Vunoccupied= Vsphere– Vcube= = ( π )(r)3 – 2744 cm3

Since the volume of the cube is given, the diagonal of the cube can be determined which is equal
to the diameter of the sphere and further calculate for the radius of the sphere.

Vcube = s3 = 2744 cm3; s = 14 cm

dcube= dsphere = √ 3 s = √ 3 ( 14 cm )=¿24.24 cm

r = dsphere / 2 = 24.24871131cm / 2 = 12.12 cm

Substituting to the volume of the unoccupied space:

4 4
Vunoccupied= ( π )(r)3 – 2744 cm3 = ( π )(12.12cm)3 – 2744 cm3
3 3

Vunoccupied= 4713.555065 cm3

ANSWER: A

Discussion:

The diagonal of a cube inscribed inside a sphere is equal to the diameter of the sphere.
