1. How did World War II grow the counseling field?


World War II continued to grow the field by creating a greater demand for counselors,
offering vocational tests, and creating counseling degrees in universities. With the
advent of World War II, the U.S. government needed counselors and psychologists to
help select and train specialists for the military and industry. The war also brought
about a new way of looking at vocations for men and women.

2. What trends in history did you notice about the development of Guidance
Counseling?
In addition to the development of theory and the generation of practical ways of
working with people, important events in the development of counseling include the
involvement of the government in counseling during and after World War I, the Great
Depression, World War II, and the launching of Sputnik.

3. Who do you think were most influential person in the history of Guidance
Counseling?
The most influential person in the history of Guidance Counseling is Frank Parson
who is Father of Guidance and who founded the movement for organized vocational
guidance. Through his vision, organizational ability, advocacy, and clarification of
sound principles and methods—Parsons started a movement which has inspired the
devotion and contributions of many men and women since. Collectively, they have all
made counseling what it is today.
