Case Study 16.3

1. What role should ethics play in the writing of a proposal such as this? Did
the PEO do the ethical thing for David? How much money should the PEO
have tried to make? What would you have done if you were part of the
management at the PEO?
In writing a proposal such as David’s a smart ethical approach would
be altruism. The PEO should think about the interests of David even though
not as much money is made with a new contract. After writing up a new
contract I think that the PEO did the best they could compared to the
previous estimate. The PEO should have tried to make less money off of
David from the first contract as nothing tangible was estimated. The Second
contract seemed fairer as David was quoted lower. If I was part of the
management at PEO I would have rewritten the contract that made my
company business as well as fair to David as I want repeat business.

2. From a deontological (duty) perspective and a teleological (consequences)

perspective, how would you describe the ethics of the PEO?
The ethics of the PEO based on the “duty” perspective is that it is their
duty to create a contract for David. The consequence side of the PEO seems
as if they are not as concerned with over quotes which is adversely affect
business relationships. The duty is to provide a contract but the consequence
is higher quotes and possible loss of clients.

3. Based on what the PEO did for Davis, how would you evaluate the PEO on
the ethical principles of respect, service, justice, honesty, and community?
Based on the rewritten contract, the PEO respected David enough to
work with him based off their initial quote. They want to serve David as in
the long run it is good business for them. David, I feel, did have justice and
honesty with the company as the PEO came out with a better quote that
would benefit both parties. Lastly, the community was thought about in the
whole business aspect. Another printing company available to community
needs etc.

4. How would you assess the ethics of the PEO if you were David? If you were
among the PEO management? If you were the salesperson? If you were a
member of the printing company?
I would assess the ethics of the PEO as altruistic. The PEO wanted
David’s business and where willing to change aspects of the contract to
make the changes happen. If I were a management personal at the PEO I
would feel obligated to make sure the client got his needs and if that meant
losing some commission, then at least business was gained, a utilitarianism
viewpoint. To assess the salesperson I would be viewing the entire situation
from ethical egoism. The salesperson would want to quote higher even if it
was not in the company’s policy to do so as more commission was in it for
the employee. As a member of the printing company I would assess the
situation as my new boss David trying to do the best he can to make sure the
business functions smoothly while including my needs as an employee.
