Problem - Solution Research Essay

Problem and solution is an essential element in academic texts. This type of essay is a typical approach to
academic questions: it is also known as the Situation-Problem-Solution-Evaluation pattern. In your essay,
you are identifying the topic as a problem to be solved. In an SPRE essay there is focus on the situation
which led to the problem, a comparison of multiple solutions and an evaluation of which solution is most
effective.

Topics:

Select one of the topics below from units 4 and 11. Research methods for solving the problem you chose.

1. The problems with classifications system, e.g. the rich and the poor (pgs. 61-62).
2. Difficulties in maintaining an active lifestyle (pgs. 67-69, and 227).
3. Genetically modified organisms (pgs. 169-170).
4. The problems small businesses face with technology (pg. 177-179).
5. Keeping up with the pace of technological innovation (pg. 179).

Design your own topic from units 4 (Order), 11 (Technology), 8 (Interpretation) or 2 (Systems) of your
textbook and have it approved. Topic:

CONTENT REQUIREMENTS:

Below are the objectives that must be included from pages 173-176 and 219 of your textbook.

 Your thesis statement will identify the main topic, limitation and essay instruction.
 A description and definition of the situation that led to the problem you have selected
 A description of the characteristics of the problem
 A compare / contrast as part of your solutions
 Expressions of critical thought in your evaluation of solutions
 A persuasive conclusion on which you convince the reader that one solution is better than the
other
 Use appropriate evaluative language (p. 171-172, 174-175, and 203).
 1000-1500 words (not including the last page); typed in APA citation format.
