1. What is a stock exchange ? How does it work ?

A stock exchange, or the other name are securities exchange or bourse, is a facility

where stock brokers and traders can buy and sell securities, such
as shares of stock and bonds and other financial instruments. Stock exchanges also
provide for facilities the issue and redemption of such securities and instruments and
capital events including the payment of income and dividends. Stock exchanges
often function as "continuous auction" markets with buyers and sellers consummating
transactions at a central location such as the floor of the exchange.

2. The Malaysian stock exchange is known as Bursa Malaysia. Provide the names of

3. Explain the following terms :

a) Capital market
- Activities that gather funds from some entities and make them available to
other entities needing funds. The main function of a market is to improve the
efficiency of transactions so that each individual entity does not need to
search and analyse, create legal agreements and complete funds transfer.

b) Money market
- Financial instruments with high liquidity and very short maturities are traded. It
is used by participants as a means for borrow and lend in the short term, with
maturities that usually range from overnight to just under a year.

c) Initial Public Offering (IPO)

- A private company or corporation raises investment capital by offering its
stock to the public for the first time.

d) Bull and Bear markets

- A financial market of a group of securities in which prices are rising or are
expected to rise. The term “bull market” most often used to refer the stock
market but can be applied to anything that is traded, such as bonds,
currencies and commodities.

e) Blue-chip stock
- The stock of a large, well-established and financially sound company that has
operated for many years. It is typically has a market capitalization in the
billions, generally the market leader or among the top three companies in its
sector, and is more often than not a household name.
