Soil Classification and Properties Guide

This document provides a classification system for soils and soil-aggregate mixtures. It divides materials into general categories of granular materials containing 35% or less particles passing a No. 200 sieve, and silt-clay materials containing more than 35% passing a No. 200 sieve. Within each category are subgroups designated A-1 through A-7 based on sieve analysis and characteristics of material passing a No. 40 sieve such as liquid limit and plasticity index. The subgroups are further described by their typical constituent materials and general rating for use as subgrade.
