SOCIAL SCIENCE

A landscape is everything we can see in an area. Landscapes can be in-land or


coastal landscapes.

There are different types of landscapes. There are natural, rural and urban
landscapes.

In natural landscapes there is no human intervention, they are not changed by


people but they can be changed by nature (wind, fire, floodwaters). For example,
natural in-land landscapes are valleys, mountain ranges, mountains, plains, rivers,
lakes, etc; and natural coastal landscapes are archipelagos, islands, capes, gulfs,
beaches, etc.

Rural and urban landscapes are changed by people. Rural landscapes are areas of
farming. There are few people and few houses and they are normally surrounded by
nature.

Urban landscapes can be villages, town and cities. There are more people and
houses. There are urban features: traffic lights, port, signs, street lights, zebra
crossings, etc.

People in rural and urban landscapes have different jobs: doctors, teachers,
firefighters, forest rangers, lifeguards, fishermen/fisherwomen, farmers,
policemen/policewomen, etc.

Safety road

In urban areas there is a lot of traffic. Signs help us control people and means of
transport. Circle signs mean obligation, triangle signs mean danger and square
signs mean information. When crossing the road stop, look right and left, listen and
think. Wear a helmet when riding a bike. Wear the seatbelt in the car. Sit down and
hold on in the bus.
