PROBLEM 1:

Given:
Atotal = 965 cm2
Width of frame border = 5 cm

Required:
Dimensions of the painting  length and width; but since length = width for square then we just find for
one side of the square  spainting

Spainting = ?

Solution:

Atotal = (stotal)2  equation 1

Stotal = spainting + sborder  sborder = 5 cm
Stotal = spainting + 5 cm  equation 2
Combining equation 1 and equation 2:
Atotal = (spainting + 5 cm)2  Atotal = 965 cm2
965 cm2 = (spainting + 5 cm)2  apply square root to both sides of equation
1st case: spainting + 5 cm = +sqrt(965 cm2)  always go with the positive answer for dimension problems
2nd case: spainting + 5 cm = -sqrt(965 cm2)
Spainting + 5 cm = +sqrt(965 cm2)  subtract 5 cm on both sides of equation
Spainting = +sqrt(965 cm2) – 5 cm
Spainting = 31.0645 cm – 5 cm
spainting = 26.0645 cm

Answer:
The painting has a side of 26.0645 cm
PROBLEM 2:

Given:
A = 4x2 + 5x – 6  area of rectangle
W = x + 2  width of rectangle

Required:
Length  L

L=?

Solution:

A = (L) (W)  divide both sides of equation by W

L=A
W
L = 4x2 + 5x – 6
x+2
L = (x + 2) (4x – 3)  (x + 2) cancels out
x+2
L = 4x – 3

*if x = 8 cm

L = 4x – 3
L = [(4)(8 cm)] – 3 cm
L = 29 cm

W=x+2
W = 8 cm + 2 cm
W = 10 cm

A = (L) (W)
A = (29 cm) (10 cm)
A = 290 cm2

Answers:
a. Length is 4x – 3 units
b. Length is 29 cm, Width is 10 cm, and Area is 290 cm 2
PROBLEM 3:

Given:
A = 24 sq.m.  area of rectangle

The length is 2 more than twice the width

L is 2 more than twice W
L is 2 more than 2W
L is 2 + 2W
L = 2 + 2W  relationship of length and width

Required:
Dimensions:
Length (L) and Width (W)

L=?
W=?

Solution:

A = (L) (W)  apply L = 2 + 2W

A = (2 + 2W) (W)
A = 2W + 2W2  A = 24 sq.m.
24 sq.m. = 2W + 2W2  divide whole equation by 2
12 sq.m. = W + W2  convert to standard form ax2 + bx + c = 0
W2 + W – 12 = 0  factor
(W + 4 m.) (W - 3 m.) = 0
1st case: W + 4 m. = 0  W = -4 m.
2nd case: W – 3 m. = 0  W = +3 m.  always go with the positive answer for dimension problems

W = 3 m.

L = 2 m. + 2W
L = 2 m. + (2)(3 m.)
L = 2 m. + 6 m.
L = 8 m.

Answer:

The length of the rectangle is 8 m. and the width is 3 m.

PROBLEM 4:

The problem is erroneous! The equation should be 6x 3 – 16x = 4x2

Given:

6x3 – 16x = 4x2

Required:

Values of x  there are 3 possible values since highest degree is 3

Solution:

6x3 – 16x = 4x2

6x3 – 4x2 – 16x = 0  factor
(2x) (3x + 4) (x – 2) = 0
1st case: 2x = 0  x = 0
2nd case: 3x + 4 = 0  x = -4/3
3rd case: x – 2 = 0  x = +2

Answer
x may be x = 0, x = -4/3, or x = +2
