The Problem:

26. If today is Thursday, what day

is it 500 days from now? (Using
the Polyo’s strategy)
Understand the Problem:

One has to figure out what day it is

500 days from a Thursday.
Devise a Plan:

One week consists of 7 days, Monday, Tuesday,

Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
If today is Thursday and one week after that, is still a
Thursday. Turn 500 days to weeks while leaving out
the remainder and back to days to determine the
last Thursday and count the remaining days needed
for it to become 500 days.
Carry Out the Plan:
1 𝑤𝑒𝑒𝑘
 500 days x 7 𝑑𝑎𝑦𝑠 = 71.4 weeks = 71 weeks

7 𝑑𝑎𝑦𝑠
 71 weeks x = 497 days. The last Thursday of the 500 days.
1 𝑤𝑒𝑒𝑘

 497 days + 3 days (Friday, Saturday, Sunday) = 500 days

 Thus, 500 days from a Thursday is Sunday

Review the Solution:

It makes sense as 500 days have

passed, we just converted it to weeks,
remove the remainder and converted it
back to days, and added 3 days, every 7
days or week of a particular day is still
that day just 7 days after hence that is
why we converted it to weeks first, and 3
days after a Thursday is Sunday.
Counterexample

Is proving a statement is false by

coming up with an example.
ANOTHER PROBLEM
The Problem:
28.) Find a counterexample that shows that the
given conjecture is false.

(a + b)(a − b)
=a+b
a−b
Understanding the Problem

We must prove the conjecture is false

by providing an example that will
prove that it is false.
Devise a Plan:

Using trial and error to think of

values that prove the conjecture to
be false
Carry out the Plan:
If a=1, b=1 If a=3, b=3
(1 + 1)(1 − 1)
=1+1
(3 + 3)(3 − 3)
=3+3
1−1 3−3
(2)(0) (6)(0)
=2 =6
0 0
Undefined = 2 Undefined = 6
Counterexample: If a=b, then

(a + b)(a − b)
=a+b
a−b
is false.
Review the Solution:

It makes sense as anything divided by

zero is always undefined and that
makes the conjecture automatically
false.
