1. Explain global warming and its effects to our environment.

Global warming is the unusual rapid increase in Earth's average surface
temperature over the past century primarily due to the greenhouse gases released by
burning of fossil fuels causing an immediate and direct changes to the planet. These
changes which causes bad effects impacts all kinds of life. People , primarily are reliant
on natural environment in almost all aspects of their lives. But, ironically they are also
the ones destroying it, reducing the chance of sustainability in resources. Human
activities are the biggest contributors to environmental damages and it greatly affect the
nature which unfortunately results to what we call global warming. Effects of it includes
some such as it stresses ecosystems through temperature rises, water shortages,
increased fire threats, drought, weed and pest invasions, intense storm damage and
salt invasion.

2. Give at least 3 sources of air, water, and noise pollution, and its effects on
living things.

Air pollution sources and effects

Mobile sources – such as cars, buses, planes, trucks, and trains
Effects: contribute to such problems as asthma, heart disease, birth defects and eye
irritation. Emission from cars also increases carbon dioxide (CO2) and other
greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
Stationary sources – such as power plants, oil refineries, industrial facilities, and
factories
Effects: factories release toxic gases which increases the risk of developing chronic
respiratory disease, lung cancer, heart disease and many other illnesses, diseases and
conditions.
Area sources – such as agricultural areas, cities, and wood burning fireplaces
Effects: produces carbon monoxide (CO) which reduces the blood’s ability to supply
oxygen to body tissues, and can cause stress on your heart and reduce your ability to
exercise.
Water pollution sources and effects
Sewage (Waste Water) —effluent outfalls from factories, refineries, waste treatment
plants etc.. that emit fluids of varying quality directly into urban water supplies
Effects: results to poisonous drinking water, poisonous food animals (due to these
organisms having bio-accumulated toxins from the environment over their life spans),
unbalanced river and lake ecosystems that can no longer support full biological diversity
Agricultural Pollution —uncontrolled spreading of slurries and manure, disposal of
sheep dip, tillage, ploughing of the land, use of pesticides and fertilizers can cause
water pollution.
Effects: contaminates both groundwater and surface water
Oil Spills —loss from storage facilities; spillage during delivery and; deliberate disposal
of waste oil to drainage systems
Effects: oil can make drinking water unsafe to drink. Also it reduces oxygen supplies
within the water environment.

Noise pollution sources and effects

Air traffic noise –aircraft flying over cities
Effects: physically too much noise can cause respiratory agitation, racing pulse, high
blood pressure, and headaches.
Construction sites –building and car park construction and road and pavement
resurfacing works
Effects: noise can cause attacks of stress, fatigue, depression, anxiety and hysteria in
both humans and animals.
Catering and night life –bars, restaurants and terraces that spill outside including
noise from pubs and clubs.
Effects: loud noise can have latent effects on our behavior, causing aggressive behavior
and irritability.

3. What is solid waste management?

Waste management includes the activities and actions required to manage waste
from its inception to its final disposal. This helps protect the environment and the health
of the people by collecting, treating, and disposing of solid materials. Rubbish and
waste can cause air pollution and water pollution which is literally harmful. Solid waste
management, however can reduce these bad effects to the environment and the living.
