According to IS 456:2000

The maximum diameter of bar that can be used in slabs should not be more than (Depth of
slab)/8

In your case it is 75/8

Hence it should not be more than 8mm (as 9mm bar is not available)

First thing we keep in mind that we are following IS 456 2000 for our references.

The maximum dia of bar we can use in slab is equal to overall depth ÷ 8

Now from here we calculate the spacing of reinforcement as per the Ast calculation as per
bending moment.

This spacing should be less than 300mm and 3×effective depth of slab

Less than 300 mm to avoid cracking criteria and less than 3d as per saint vienant principle of
stress.

Now in slab the distribution reinforcement also provided just to hold the main reinforcement at
place otherwise main reinforcement will dislocate when concrete is pour. Secondary or
distribution reinforcement is not designed for moment hence the spacing is equal to 5d or
450mm whichever is minimum.
