Week 3 log

The first day of this week for me was Tuesday and it was our last in-service day.
Going into Tuesday I knew we had a lot to get done. Before I walked into the classroom
my mentor and I had a game plan. I think I got really good experience being able to help
set up the room especially in this time. We spend a good part of the day logging the
students on to their iPad so that when school started, they would be able to log on and
sign in without a problem. Then we took time and made sure everyone was 6 feet apart.
(for the new school regulations). It was nice to be able to be in the classroom for an
entire day since most of the other in-service days we had to attend meetings.
When school started the next day, I was pretty nervous. I have been in a
classroom before but with all of the regulations and that children haven’t been in a
school setting since early March. But when the students came in my nerves went away
and it started out great! Most of them could not pronounce my name so I had everyone
call me Miss M. (Michalides is kind of hard for a first grader).
My mentor let me start teaching right off the bat. A student was having a difficult
time following directions so she pulled her outside and then I jumped right in and picked
up where she left off and when she came back she took over. I was not sure if I was
supposed to do that or if she wanted me to do that so when I had a second alone with
her while the kids were at their specials I made sure to ask that I did what she wanted
and she said yes, she was glad that I felt comfortable enough to jump right in and keep
the rest of the class focused.
The next 2 days went great as well. On Thursday my mentor asked me to teach
the math lesson and Friday I taught handwriting. But lessons were super short since it
was the first week of school, but it was really nice for me to be able to get the feeling of
being in front of the room.
The kids in our class are very well behaved. We have one who is a little but of a
distraction to the rest but is easily redirected. I also had the chance at the end of the day
to look at the scores our students received when they were pulled out of the class for
reading and most of our students are pretty high. We have a good chunk that were
above grade level and on grade level. Only a few were below grade level. My mentor
and I set out a plan (just while we were looking at it) for how we want to do centers if we
are able to have them. (do to the class regulations of not being allowed to be near other
students). I really like that she is very organized and plans so far in advanced. It helps
me be able to do the same.
I am looking forward to doing the entire lesson this week!
