Student Teacher Leeah Michalides Grade 1st

Subject Science _
Time Needed for Lesson 20-25 mintues Lesson Concept Physical Science

PA STANDARD(S) (Write out standards):

3.2.1.A.6 – Participate in simple investigations of matter to answer a question or to test a prediction.

3.2.1.A.5 – Recognize that everything is made of matter
3.2.1.A.4 – Observe and describe what happens when substances are heated or cooled. Distinguish between
changes that are reversible and not reversible.
3.2.1.A.3 – Identify how heating, melting, cooling, etc., may cause changes in the properties of materials
3.2.1.A.1 – Observe and describe the properties of liquids and solids. Investigate what happens when solids are
mixed with water and other liquids are mixed with water.
BIG IDEAS/ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS:

BIG IDEA: Physical properties help us to understand the world.

ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS: What are physical properties of objects? How are physical properties of objects
discovered? What effect does energy have on the physical properties of objects?

OBJECTIVE(S) (Be sure to include all four parts):

Students will understand the stages of matter 87% of the time
Students will see a fun way the stages of matter and can remember/ repeat the stages 85% of the time

MATERIALS:
 Straws
 Cups
 Worksheets
 Root beer
 Ice cream
 Pencils
 Crayons
 Ice cream scooper

ACTIVITIES (There are three sections here):

OPENING (Introduction, purpose, hook)

 Teacher will read some pages of the matter book
 Teacher will explain that todays science lesson includes making a snack.

BODY (Bulleted step by step/differentiation must be included)

o Teacher will have all of the students sit at their desks (COVID)
o Teacher will talk about the parts of a root beer float.
o Students will answer (Teacher will write them on the board)
 Ice cream
 Root beer
 Cups
 Teacher will ask students which ingredient they think is in what stage of matter
o Ice cream – Solid
o Root beer – liquid
o When you combined them the cold meets and becomes a gas
 Watch closely as we see
 While this is going on students will work on 2 worksheets about what they are seeing and what they saw
 What’s the Matter in Root Beer Floats
 Matter is TASTY
This will be teacher led. Teacher will go over papers and explain step by step then allowing
students to go on and finish the rest on their own.
 Students will then get to enjoy the science experiment

CLOSURE (Wrap up and brief summary): How will you plan to restate the lesson objective?
 Class will come back together and go over worksheets. And talk about the experiment.

ACCOMMODATIONS/MODIFICATIONS:
 Students who need help with this will be placed near the teacher for extra support.
 Advanced students will have another worksheet that will help enhance their learning.

ASSESSMENT: (How you will determine that student has mastered objectives?): Consider formative and
summative assessment measures for all levels of differentiation.
 Teacher will know that students understand the concept by their participation with the activity. By
following and doing the worksheets
