Student Teacher Leeah Michalides Grade 1st

Subject Science _
Time Needed for Lesson 20-25 mintues Lesson Concept Physical Science

PA STANDARD(S) (Write out standards):

3.2.1.A.6 – Participate in simple investigations of matter to answer a question or to test a prediction.

3.2.1.A.5 – Recognize that everything is made of matter
3.2.1.A.4 – Observe and describe what happens when substances are heated or cooled. Distinguish between
changes that are reversible and not reversible.
3.2.1.A.3 – Identify how heating, melting, cooling, etc., may cause changes in the properties of materials
3.2.1.A.1 – Observe and describe the properties of liquids and solids. Investigate what happens when solids are
mixed with water and other liquids are mixed with water.
BIG IDEAS/ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS:

BIG IDEA: Physical properties help us to understand the world.

ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS: What are physical properties of objects? How are physical properties of objects
discovered? What effect does energy have on the physical properties of objects?

OBJECTIVE(S) (Be sure to include all four parts):

Students will understand the stages of matter 87% of the time
Students will see a fun way the stages of matter and can remember/ repeat the stages 85% of the time

MATERIALS:
 Brown paper bags
 Noodles (cooked)
 Stickers
 Playdough
 Clear baggies
 Flour
 Nail file
 Worksheets
 Water
 Cotton balls

ACTIVITIES (There are three sections here):

OPENING (Introduction, purpose, hook)

 Teacher will begin the lesson by going over the stages of matter and the anchor chart
o Solid
o Liquid
o Gas
 Teacher will ask students to put hands on head and close their eyes

BODY (Bulleted step by step/differentiation must be included)

 Teacher will pass out all bags and place them on the desk for students along with their worksheets
 Teacher will tell them to open their eyes but not to touch
 Teacher then will go over all the rules of the bag and the worksheet and explain what they are to do
 Students will then put their hand inside of the bag and feel around
o Students will try to guess what it in their bag and what stage of matter it is in
 While they do this they are supposed to be filling out the worksheet
 Teacher will be walking around the classroom while this is being done and help students think of words
of what they are feeling.

CLOSURE (Wrap up and brief summary): How will you plan to restate the lesson objective?
 Class will come back together and go over worksheets. And talk about the experiment. Students will
take turns telling what they felt in the bag and then show the class what was in their mystery bag. We
will make a chart of solid, liquid and gas items in the bags and write them on the paper. Then as a class
we will talk about why we think we had more in one group than the others.

ACCOMMODATIONS/MODIFICATIONS:
 Students who need help with this will be placed near the teacher for extra support.
 Students who are advanced will have harder objects to guess and will have another worksheet that will
enhance their learning.

ASSESSMENT: (How you will determine that student has mastered objectives?): Consider formative and
summative assessment measures for all levels of differentiation.
 Teacher will know that students understand the concept by their participation with the activity. By
following and doing the worksheets
