Explicit Teaching Lesson Plan in

Science Grade 3
Quarter 1 Week 1

I. OBJECTIVES
Content Standard:
The learners demonstrate understanding of ways of sorting
materials and describing them as solid, liquid or gas based on
observable properties.
Performance Standard:
The learners should be able to group common objects found at
home and in school according to solid, liquid and gas.
Learning Competency:
Classify objects and materials as solid, liquid, and gas based on
observable characteristics.
II. SUBJECT MATTER
1. Topic: Phases of Matter
2. References: Kto12 Curriculum Guide in Science p.20
Science and Health 3 Teacher’s Manual. Jacinto Emilio S.
Jr., et al 1997. pp109-111
3. Materials: Real objects, cut-out pictures, cartolina, pentel pen,
flashcards, visual aids
4. Integration: English and Math
5. Values Infusion: Cooperation
III. LEARNING ACTIVITIES/PROCEDURES
A. Introduction (Prayer, Greetings, Attendance, Classroom Inspection)
1. Drill
 The teacher will ask the students what they see inside the
classroom and inside their homes.
2. Review
 The teacher will ask the students, what they have
remembered on their past lessons in science last school year,
since it is the start of the first quarter, to test if they can
recall something.
3. Motivation
 The teacher will show to the pupils three real objects.
(wallet, bottled water and balloon)
B. Teaching/Modeling
1. The teacher will present the concept.
 The teacher will show again the three real objects and
explain that what they have saw is what we call Matter, and
will then enumerate the three phases of matter; Solid. Liquid
and Gas.
 Using flashcards, the teacher will show things that are solid,
liquid and gas. Afterwards, the teacher will explain one by
one their meanings and how to classify them.
 The teacher will ask the pupils to look for a thing inside their
bags or inside the classroom and present in class on what
phase of matter does it belong.
C. Guided Practice (group activity)
Mechanics. The class will be divided into 3groups. They will be
given 5minutes to finish their assigned task. The chosen reporter of each
group will be given 2 minutes to explain their work. All materials are
provided by the teacher.
Group 1. Complete Me: (English and Math Integration)
Pupils will correct the scrambled words and they will
count the syllables.
Group 2. Cut Me Out: Pupils will cut out the pictures which is
printed out in a bondpaper. Afterwards, they will
classify them on what phase of matter does it belong.
Group 3. Connect Me: Pupils will connect the column A to
column B.
D. Generalization
 What are the three phases of Matter?
 Values Infusion: Does knowing the phases of matter
important in our lives?
E. Application
The teacher will have questions posted on the board and
random pupils will answer the questions.
F. Evaluation (Seatwork)
Instructions: Write S if it is solid, L if it is liquid or G if it is gas.
Write your answers inside the box beside each picture.

G. Assignment: Print one example of each phases of matter and paste it

in your activity notebook.
