Barack Hussein Obama was born on August 4, 1961, in Honolulu, Hawaii. His father, Barack Obama, Sr., was born in
1934 in Kenya and died in a car crash in Nairobi, Kenya in 1982. Obama Sr. was married a total of three times and
fathered a daughter, Auma Obama, and at least four sons in addition to Barack : Abongo Obama, Mark Okoth Obama,
David Opiyo Obama and George Hussein Onyango Obama. 

Habiba Akumu Obama was born in 1918. She was Barack Obama's paternal grandmother, and the second wife of
Hussein Onyango Obama, his grandfather. Together they had 3 children. Habiba Akuma died in 2006.

Hussein Onyango Obama , grandfather to Barack Obama, was born in 1895. Onyango worked as a cook and as a
local herbalist. He died in 1979.

Barack Obama’s mother, Ann Dunham, was born in 1942 in Wichita, Kansas. She divorced Barack Obama senior in
1964. In 1965 she married Lolo Soetoro and in 1967, the family moved to Jakarta, where Obama’s half-sister Maya
Soetoro was born. Today, Maya is a teacher in Honolulu. She and her husband, Konrad Ng, have 2 daughters, Suhaila
and Savita. Barack Obama’s mother died in November 1995 of cancer.

Obama’s grandfather, Stanley Armour Dunham worked on oil rigs during the Depression. His wife, Madelyn Lee
Payne, Obama’s maternal grandmother, was born in 1922 in Wichita, Kansas and died on November 2, 2008 in Oahu,
Hawaii.

Barack Obama graduated from Columbia University and Harvard Law School, where he met his future wife, Michelle
Robinson.

Michelle Obama was born Michelle LaVaughn Robinson on January 17, 1964, to Fraser and Marian Robinson. She
was born in Chicago and she attended Princeton University and Harvard Law School. She has a brother, Craig
Robinson, born in 1962.

Michelle met Barack Obama when they were the only two African Americans at their law firm (Sidley Austin), where
she was assigned to mentor him while he was a summer associate. The couple married in 1992. They have two
daughters, Malia, who was born in 1998 and Sasha who was born in 2001.
