WHAT IS BREAST CANCER?

A cancer that forms in the cells of the

breasts. Breast cancer can occur in
women and rarely in men.

bloody discharge from the nipple, and changes in the
shape or texture of the nipple or breast.
Treatment depends on the stage of cancer. It may consist
of chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery.

RISK FACTORS

Personal history of breast conditions

Family history of breast cancer
Obesity
Drinking alcohol
Increasing age

PREVENTION

Ask your doctor about breast cancer

screenings (clinical breast exams &
mammograms)
Become familiar with your breasts through
breast self-exam for breast awareness

BREAST SELF EXAMS & MAMMOGRAMS

Adult women of all ages are encouraged to perform breast self-

exams at least once a month. While mammograms can help you
to detect cancer before you can feel a lump, breast self-exams
help you to be familiar with how your breasts look and feel so you
can alert your healthcare professional if there are any changes.
