Lesson Idea Name: Endosymbiosis Cartoon

Content Area: Biology
Grade Level(s): 10th grade
Content Standard Addressed:
SB4. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information to illustrate the organization of interacting systems
within single-celled and multi-celled organisms.
a. Construct an argument supported by scientific information to explain patterns in structures and function
among clades of organisms, including the origin of eukaryotes by endosymbiosis.
Technology Standard Addressed:
Creative Communicator- 6a- Students choose the appropriate platforms and tools for meeting the desired
objectives of their creation or communication.
6b-Students create original works or responsibly repurpose or remix digital resources into new creations.
Global Collaborator- 7a- Students use digital tools to connect with learners from a variety of backgrounds and
cultures, engaging with them in ways that broaden mutual understanding and learning.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

In this lesson, I would show expression in options for Expressive Skills and Fluency, by composing in multiple
media such as text, speech, drawing, illustration, comics, storyboards, design, film, music, visual art,
sculpture, or video. This shows UDL because this would give the students options for how they would like to
engage in this assignment. As to engagement, options for Recruiting Interest, I would involve learners where
and whenever possible, in setting their own personal academic and behavioral goals. That way, students
would actually be invested in the outcome. In options for self-regulation I intend to use prompt, reminders,
guides, rubrics, and checklists that focus on self-regulatory goals. Using rubrics and checklists would let the
students know they were on the right track.
Lesson idea implementation:
In this lesson, I am using video to assign the students an endosymbiosis cartoon. I will fulfill the standards
by understanding the origin of eukaryotes by endosymbiosis. I will do this by assigning the students an
endosymbiosis cartoon. The project will be introduced by compare and contrast about eukaryotic and
prokaryotic cells. Then, I will put the video up on the board. This project will take two to three days to
complete. I will show the video, and they will draw out their cartoons. Then, I will show them how to use the
iMovie and put audio. Over the weekend, they will complete the project. I will differentiate learning by
allowing students extra time, and extra help with the movie maker.

MultiMedia Tools
I would extend the learning by allowing the top three students to show their cartoons to the school.
Thus students could have the opportunity to share in a safe space, but see what it is like to present. I will
conclude this lesson by doing a 3-2-1: 3 things they learned, 2 things they have a question about, 1 thing
they want the instructor to know. I will provide feedback in the form of a rubric with notes.

Importance of technology:
Using multimedia tools are critical to the project because the students are growing up in a technology filled
environment and I want to equip the students in as much technology as I can. This project could be
completed without technology, but it would be unexciting. The other types of technology that could be used
are PowerPoint presentations, podcasts, or blogs. A blog could be used if you got the parent’s permission, and
explained to the student’s internet safety.
Inspiration (optional): Endosymbiosis Cartoon, but I added the part where the students film the cartoon and
add audio.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy:

Some possible Internet safety precautions could be students not listening to the internet privacy and safety,
not having informed the administration and parents about the lessons. I will make them sign something that
says that they have read the internet safety pamphlet. I will announce to parents and administrators what I
am planning.
Reflective Practice:
This lesson will impact student learning by giving them another way to learn that isn’t rote memorization.
Plus, the students will learn about video making. I would further extend the learning by giving them a lab.
Bubbles are given off by the plant through photosynthesis. By measuring the rate at which the bubbles are
produced, it is possible to tell how fast the plant is photosynthesizing. Read and follow the directions on how
to use this lab simulator at the link below. Then press start and record the bubbles per minute for each of the
light distances in the table below. (Record this data on a sheet of paper.) Then transfer your data to the graph
below. They would need a computer.
