1. Introduction

Gongju is a place located in a South Chungcheong province, in South Korea. Ii is approximately


45 minutes by bus from Daejeon. The cost of the bus is really cheap around 3000 wons one way
ticket. Gongju was formerly named Ungjin and was the capital of Baekje from AD 475 to 538. In
this place there is a National Museum. This place of historical culture about the Baekje period,
exhibiting all artifacts find in the excavation from the Royal Tomb of the King Muryeong.

2. Gongju National Museum

The museum is locate in Ungjin. It opens the door on April 1, 1946. Relocated to Jung-dong,
Gongju on October 12, 1973, and relocated in a new building in Ungjin-dong on May 14, 2004.
The exhibitions have a collection of 94590 pieces. Founded in the excavation of the Tomb of
King Muryeong. The museum has to section the Ungjin Baekje Gallery, and the history and
culture of Chungcheongnam-do Province Gallery. The first one present the artifacts form the late

Hanseong Baekje period. Divided in 4 Sections: From Hanseong to Ungjin, Culture of Ungjin
Baekje, Life and Achievements of King Muryeong and From Ungjun to Sabi. The second one
present relics associated with the local culture during the prehistorical, medieval and early
modern periods (from Paleolithic to the Joseon period. Divided in 3 sections: Prehistoric Culture,
Ancient Culture and Medieval and Pre-Modern Culture.[ CITATION Gon181 \l 1033 ]

Ungjin Baekje Gallery

Section one correspond to From Hanseoung to Ungjin present items like the Tripod Cauldron
with Handle and a gift bronze crown. The section two present items like incense case with
phoenix design and a Chinese celadon jar. The section 3 have items like the Tomb Guardian
Animal, Tombstone and Earrings (King and Queen). The Section 4 have a Vessel Stand. All this
object show the influent and the pass of the cultures in this area. [ CITATION Gon181 \l 1033 ]

The history and culture of Chungcheongnam-do Province Gallery

Section one show items from the Paleolithic, Neolithic and Bronze Ages, like Pick and Korean-
type Bronze Dagger. The section 2 show items from the ancient culture on the Korean Peninsula
with the addition of iron culture to the existing culture there is items like Buddha Triad Stele,
Earrings, owl Cap Ornament and Bird-Shaped Pottery. The last section show artifacts from the
medieval and early modern periods like stamp and case, bottle from Joseon Dynasty and
Sagyejeonseo (Collected works of Gim Jangsaeng) [ CITATION Gon181 \l 1033 ]

3. Conclusion

The visit to the museum is helpful to learn a little more about the history and culture of Korea.

The trip was quite entertaining and allowed us to enjoy a few hours of knowledge about the
Korean culture.

It is possible to observe and without spending money as has been the cultural advance in the
passage of time.

A recommended trip to know a little more about the funerary procedures for emperors in ancient
times.
