I used to be homophobic. With eyes opened wide, I told gay

people—“You'll go to hell!” I used to cringe, shudder, roll

my eyes—until one day, my friend told me that she was a

closet lesbian. I eventually found out that I was the last

person she told—she was afraid I wouldn’t accept her. I felt

ashamed for hurting someone I loved. I hugged her, shut

 my eyes, and whispered “I’m sorry.” • Then, it dawned on

me—how did I become full of hatred? I wasn’t perfect—

who was I to judge others? Who was I to believe that I’m

better than anyone? How could I say that God didn't love

gay people? Who was I to think that Jesus didn’t die for

them, too? • My eyes slowly opened as I surrounded myself

with more members of the LGBTQIA+ community. It was a

lesbian stranger—now one of my closest friends—who told

me of a job opening at the media company I now work in.

I've worked with gay photographers and designers, trans

women stylists and makeup artists, bisexual writers and

videographers, and more. These brilliant, creative,

intelligent people became my family in this crazy industry. •

I love my friends, and it pains me to know that they

experience discrimination every day—even in the most

mundane things. Simple things like entering a restroom

they feel comfortable in, dressing in clothes they feel

confident in, holding the hand of the person they love, being

accepted by family—these are all things I never thought

would be hard for anyone, just because I am a straight

woman! But for our LGBTQIA+ friends, this is their every

day. • This is why I am for the SOGIE Equality Bill—a bill

that seeks equality across all genders. Basically, every one

—even straight people!—can benefit from this. It literally

means that gender-based discrimination (like being denied

a job or healthcare based on your gender) will not be

allowed. • As a straight woman, I too have experienced

discrimination—I even faced double standards in my quest

for justice against a man who harassed me. But I can only

imagine the discrimination my LGBTQIA+ friends face

Hello… it’s me. *Awkward laugh.* If I’m writing down a

list, I might as well add a personal favorite, right? Right.
I can’t help but share this affordable, proudly
homegrown gem! The Beaublends liquid lipstick in
Fearless is a buildable but pigmented cool brown
shade—a major deviation from my usual style.
Typically, I’d go for more natural tones and everyday
nudes, but I figured I’d have to wear something bold
and fearless—*wink, wink*—at one point. I’ve worn
this to concerts, nights out, and some pretty memorable
dates, too. Bonus trivia nobody asked for, but I thought
you should know: It’s kiss-proof!

Here’s a little something for morenas who’d like to add

flair to their no-fuss everyday look, without the
complexity of heavy lipsticks. While I visited Aya
Abesamis’ profile with the intention of finding a good
lippie recommendation, I was pleasantly surprised
when she informed me that her simple look was
indeed… simple. “It’s just minimal tint and a go-to for lip
moisture and care,” the beauty queen explains. “And
smells nice too.” She admits to having been using this
product since grade school, proving that proper lip care
can take you a long way!
