BTEC LEVEL 2 DIPLOMA IN ENGINEERING

Unit 1-Working Safely and Effectively in Engineering

Assignment # 1: Preparing for and Carrying out an Engineering
Activity
Assessor Name: Eng.Waed Bataineh

Student Name: Fahad Al-Batayneh

Date:2020/11/09
Hand out date: 2020/10/28

Hand in deadline: 2020/11/10

Task 1:
a) Describe the basic operation of a PC system includingMaterial handling
is a process that includes the movement, storage, protection and control of
the material. List the ten principles of material handling. Also, what are the
three main safety features of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) and
explain the employee’s responsibility about using PPE?

Material handling comes with a set rule of principles to ensure all

material handling is executed deliberately and efficiently.

All material handling workers abide by the following principles, so ensure

you revise and understand the importance of these ten points.

 Planning Principle
◦ States that all material handling operations should be the results
of a deliberate plan.
 Standardisation Principle
◦ Believes that all methods, equipment, controls, and software
should be standardised within the limits of achieving the
performance objectives.
 Work Principle
◦ Believes that material handling work should be minimised
without hindering productivity or the service level requires for the
operation.
 Ergonomic Principle
◦ Considered when designing the material handling tasks and
equipment.
 Unit Load Principle
◦ Requires all unit loads to be appropriately sized
 Space Utilisation Principle
◦ Requires all available space is used effectively and efficiently.
 System Principle
◦ States that all material movement and storage activities should
be integrated to form a coordinated operational system
 Automation Principle
◦ All material handling operations should be mechanised or
automated.
 Environmental Principle
◦ Believes that all environmental impact and energy consumption
should be considered when designing or selecting alternative
equipment and material handling systems.
 Life Cycle Cost Principle
◦ A thorough economic analysis should account for the entire
lifecycle of all material handling equipment and resulting
systems.

Three main safety features of PPE (Personal Protective

Equipment)
PPE is equipment that will protect the user against
health or safety risks at work.
It can include items such as safety helmets, gloves, eye protection.

 Permeation, Degradation, and Resistance to Liquid Penetration

 Strength and Durability
 Breathability and Comfort

Employee’s responsibility about using PPE

The Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992 place

duties on employees to take reasonable steps to ensure that the
PPE provided is properly used.
An employee must look out for themselves first and foremost. If they
keep a high standard of awareness and care in terms of their
personal space and clothing, others around them will follow suit.
They should never wear loose fitting clothing, or leave jewellery or
hair exposed if they use the machinery of any kind in the workplace.

They should treat their provided PPE with care - do not interfere with
it in any way, potentially compromising its safety and theirs.

They should fully engage with any training provided that instructs
them how to properly wear and use personal protective equipment
that your employer provides you.

b) Identify the seven groups of hazardous substance warning signs

1- 2- 3-

(Explosive) (Flammable) (Acute toxcity)

4- 5- 6-

(Oxidizing) (Health hazard/Hazardous to the ozone ) (Corrosive)

7- 8- 9-

(Serious health hazard) (Hazardous to the environment) (Gas under pressure)

Task 2:
You need to record the PPE equipment that you selected and used for
task1. Choose three processes, such as sawing that you carried out in Task
1, and then complete the following table.

Process Tools used PPE equipment selected

and used
Cutting Laser cutter Face shield or goggles,
gloves, isolation gown
Drilling Plate drilling Face shield or goggles,
gloves, isolation gown
Bending Bending Machine Gloves, isolation gown

Task 3:
Write a report identifies the hazards and risks that are associated with Task
1.

Tools and Equipments

Hand tools are tools that are powered manually and used by
craftsmen in manual operations, such as chopping, chiseling,
sawing, filing, or forging. Hand tools include anything from axes to
wrenches. The greatest hazards posed by hand tools result from
misuse and improper maintenance.

 Hazards
Hand tools can cause alot of dangers to the people working
with it or around it and it can potentially take away someones
life.
Hand tools can cause cuts and abraisions from inappropriate
use of the tools. For example:

 The tip of a chisel may break off and fly off hitting the user
or other employees.

 The wooden handles of tools may crack and splinters fly off
hitting and causing injuries to people.

 Wrenches might slip and chisels, wedges or drift pins may

shatter on impact and fragments fly off hitting employees.

 Risks

◦ Regular use of of high vibration power tools or using

types of construction vehicles can cause arm vibration
syndrome.

◦ Excessive grip force increases risk of cumulative trauma

disorders.

◦ Equipment and tools design features can increase the

risk of getting hurt and getting cuts and bruises.

Materials and Substances

Chemicals have become a part of our life, sustaining many of our

activities, preventing and controlling many diseases, increasing
agricultural productivity.
However one can not ignore that many of these chemicals may,
especially if not properly used, endanger our health and poison our
environment.

 Hazards
Chemical hazards and toxic substances pose a wide range of
health hazards such as:

 Irritation.
 sensitization and carcinogencity.

 As well as, physical hazards such as:

 Flammability

 Corrosion and explosibility.

 Hazardous substances can include:

 Biological agents - such as fungi, bacteria, viruses.

 Chemical products used or produced at work - such as

adhesives or cleaning agents.

 Biological agents - such as fungi, bacteria, viruses.

 Chemical products used or produced at work - such as

adhesives or cleaning agents.

 Risks

◦ Exposure to chemicals commonly used in workplaces

can have short- and long-term health effects.
◦ Can cause poisoning, skin rashes and disorders of the
lung, kidney and liver.

Working Environment

 Hazards

◦ vibration(hard surfaces moving together)

◦ chemicals breaking and mixing
◦ Manual Handling
◦ Electricity(cable or hose connection)
◦ Going fire

 Risks

◦ cause a trauma or a sudden worsening of employees’

health. It might involve some sort of an unexpected
event resulting in an injury.

◦ cause illnesses or the constant decrease in ability to

work.

◦ Slips and falls

◦ crushing
Dangers of not working to laid down procedures

 Hazards

◦ work involving machinery or hot surfaces.

◦ work which can be affected by bad weather
◦ using hazardous substances, such as battery acid,
bleach or

 Risks

◦ Risks to health, safety and the environment

◦ High risk of death

◦ risk of getting severe injuries thatcould affect the person

on the long term.

Task 4:

be improvedFill out the attached workshop risk assessment form that
contains Recommendations on :

Task 6:
Write at least three suggestions identifying how the activity in Task 1 could
be improved

 make sure the area is clean and there’s enough space

between the machine, me and the others
 use less noisy equipment (laser cutter)
 make sure to clean the area after each process

Task 7:
Prepare a safety policy for the work area where you carried out Task 1
including references to relevant legislation.

A health and safety policy sets out your general approach to health
and safety. It explains how you, as an employer, will manage health
and safety in your business. It should clearly say who does what,
when and how.

 Prevent accidents and cases of work-related ill health

 Manage health and safety in workplace
 provide PPE
 Employees should take reasonable care of their own health
and safety
 Employees should report all health and safety concerns to an
appropriate person (as detailed above).
 Complete risk assesment regularly
 Give training for staff
 continous consultation for the staff on health and safety
matters.
 Escape routes are well signed and kept clear and evacuation
plans are tested
