How do each of the Climatic Controls affect where WE live?

Solar Radiation
● The amount of solar radiation ready for use at the earth’s surface varies according to
location
○ Solar radiation received at higher latitudes is less intense than at the equator
■ This is because the same amount of solar radiation is spread out over
a greater area
■ This means that Vancouver gets less intense solar radiation since it is
north of the equator
● As a result, temperatures and evaporation rates decrease
● The angle of solar radiation becomes more slanted at higher latitudes
○ As a result, albedo values increase

Wind Systems
● The westerlies affect Vancouver by bringing warm air
● The polar easterlies can affect Vancouver by bringing cold air

Ocean Currents
● Vancouver has a maritime climate due to the Pacific Ocean
○ E.g. Increase in precipitation
● Vancouver is also affected by a warm Japan current

Land Masses (continents) & Bodies of Water

● The Pacific Ocean is located west of Vancouver
○ Winds pick up moisture from this large body of water
○ Large bodies of water also hold on to energy which keeps our temperatures
more moderate

Altitude
● Vancouver has low altitude
○ As a result, wind speeds are low and air is warm

Mountains
● Vancouver is located on the windward side of mountains which explains our high
rainfall

Local Influences
● Urban heat island in Downtown Vancouver
● Pollution affects the climate of Vancouver
○ E.g. pollution can change the radiation balance
● Increase in particulate matter can result in an increase of fog and precipitation
● Skyscrapers can create wind tunnels along the streets of Downtown Vancouver
○ This is caused by air being funnelled between the tall buildings
