Weekly Journal - Capstone Project

Progress I have made during this past week:

(Don’t forget to provide a breakdown of time spent on each item listed)
● Discussed and finalized the dates & times of the sessions with my mentor - 20 minutes
● Explored online and found useful and reliable resources for the research component of my
project - 30 minutes
● Watched videos to refresh my memory of how to sign the ASL alphabet as well as how to sign
the numbers, colours, days of the week, months of the year, family members, and greetings in
ASL (1 hour and 30 minutes)
● Practiced signing basic vocabulary and common questions/responses (2 hours)
● Practiced body-shifting and facial expressions (30 minutes)

What I need to move forward with my Capstone (time, space, materials, contacts):
● I will need to visit my mentor next week to review the vocabulary, phrases, and story that I will
have learned through my ASL lessons
● I will need around 2-3 hours to begin conducting my research
● Throughout next week, I will have to spend 5-7 hours completing my ASL lessons
● I will have to find more resources online (videos, etc.) to review more basic vocabulary

Obstacles I have encountered and how I’ve moved forward:

● Earlier this week, I had some difficulty with managing my time
○ I was prioritizing other school homework over my Capstone project
■ As a result, I was spending more time on other school assignments
● I decided that moving forward, I would have to create a schedule for myself for each day
○ This allowed me to better organize my time
■ As a result, I started spending an adequate amount of time on my Capstone
project each day

Obstacles I can foresee in my next steps:

● Next week, I will return to where I left off for my ASL lessons (I have not done these lessons
since the end of last year)
○ This will be a big jump for me, especially since this week I spent most of my time
reviewing the basics
○ Unfortunately, I think I may have some difficulty understanding the ASL lessons
■ Therefore, I will need to find ways that will help me easily transition from
learning the basics of ASL to the complex ASL lessons

The skills I’ve used and what I’ve learned:

● Critical thinking - I had to critically think while figuring out which online resources provide
accurate and reliable information for my research component of the project
● Solutions-oriented mentality - At the start of the week, I was feeling quite overwhelmed
because I was not spending enough time on my Capstone project. But, because of my
positive mindset, I found a solution to this obstacle: schedules.
● This week, I learned that I need to be patient with myself. There was a lot of ASL vocabulary
to review, and it was frustrating when I was not able to immediately understand the signs.
However, I eventually recognized that I must have some patience. A language cannot be
learned overnight!

My goals and deadlines for next week:

● Begin my research on the impacts of the pandemic on the deaf/hard-of-hearing communities
● Begin my official lessons for learning ASL
● Visit my community connection and practice the new vocabulary and phrases
● Find additional resources online (videos, etc.) to review more basic vocabulary
● Continue to create schedules to ensure that I efficiently organize my time

My evidence of progress. This can include but is not limited to: diagrams, screenshots,
photos, videos, rough drafts, schedules, meeting notes, mind maps, etc.

● My evidence can be found on my blog
